I really appreciate your kind explanation regarding the issue. Fortunately, I have another HSA account with Lively HSA. I’m planning to roll over the $3,000 I received from UMB Bank, which is the current HSA custodian through my employer. I intend to deposit the $3,000 (excluding interest) into my Lively HSA within 60 days of receiving the check. Should I contact UMB Bank to request a revision of the transaction category from “Excess Contribution Refund” to “Rollover”? Or is this step unnecessary?

Enter "0.00" as the AGI. See if that works. @mountainlifesoaps

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line. So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead. Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment". Then press 3 "for all other questions." Then press 2 "for all other questions." - When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything. - After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions. Then press 3 for all other inquiries It should then transfer you to an agent.
Or you can contact your local IRS office. See this IRS website for local IRS offices - http://www.irs.gov/uac/Contact-Your-Local-IRS-Office-1 or call 1-844-545-5640 to set up an appointment
Or you may want to contact a Taxpayer Advocate in your area. See this IRS website for Taxpayer Advocate in your area and a toll free number - http://www.irs.gov/Advocate/Local-Taxpayer-Advocate

Changing the order of the names on a joint return can confuse the IRS and might be why your return is being rejected. It is better to remain consistent from year to year and not change the order of the names. You can try using zero as your AGI. If that does not work and you do not want to re-do your return with the names in the same order that you used for 2023, then print, sign and mail the return.

Did the IRS send YOU a letter to request more information? If the IRS wants or needs more information from you they will request it in a letter.

However I do not see the routing number and account number on my NJ tax return. Is it coded in a hidden manner? Thanks Edsd

Does anyone know where I would mail a supporting letter I need to provide to the IRS? The letter supports an entry I made concerning an investment procedure in my tax preparation and it needs to be included. Would I send it to the normal address one would send a "hard" copy of their tax return if they were mailing it? Or is there a different address for written correspondence that is "outside" of the "normal" correspondence when completing a tax return? Thank you in advance!

" so total of $7025 was recharacterized. " $7,000 was recharacterized. the original amount to the first IRA you report as contribution to the second IRA, earnings move but that is ignored. You will get one 1099-R per account showing your total conversion(s) during the year. -- to report a non-deductible contribution, Form 8606 must be attached. OR If your IRA contribution is totally deductible take the deduction and pay tax on the whole conversion. The final tax consequence is the same either way. -- You will get a 1099-R for recharacterization but that can be discarded once you enter the Traditional IRA contribution of $7,000. @Darenl

If you are a W-2 employee then none of your employee business expenses are deductible on a federal tax return due to the tax code changes in effect for tax years 2018 thru 2025.

The IRS will contact you to finalize your plan, usually in June. You can make the changes then.

I did some search and understood that TurboTax supports reporting recharacterization and backdoor conversion, but I would like to double check what I did specially is also supported: March 2025: contributed directly $7000 to Roth IRA for year *2025*. April 10 2025: called the custodian for recharacterization into TIRA. At the time of recharacterization there was 25 dollars earnings so total of $7025 was recharacterized. I then converted $7000 on this day to make it backdoor Roth. So that leaves $25 dollars in my TIRA account. 4/16/2025. I then realized that it would have been a mess if I leave the $25 in the TIRA so I converted the remaining $25 to Roth effectively empty out my TIRA. I am assuming I will receive 3 1099R in 2026 for year 2025? is reporting my above recharacterize and conversion supported in TurboTax? Specifically do the two conversions ($7000 first and then another $25) to Roth IRA make reporting complicated in anyway? thank you

Wait until your original return has been fully processed before you amend, and make sure you have saved a pdf of the original return before you amend. (If you do not save it as a pdf, the amended return will overwrite the original, and the original will be lost forever)

I originally had my income only under the FEI (Foreign Earned Income). The IRS said I need to put a Schedule C. I put my income again in the Schedule C, but then Turbotax said I owed Federal and State taxes, but I have not lived in the USA for 365+ days. I now put $0 for my Schedule C since I made all my money as FEI (all made in a foreign account and already paid taxes in China). Am I supposed to put my actual income into the Schedule C and the Foreign Earned Income and Exclusion parts, or am I supposed to only put the income once in the FEI section?
