Filing taxes in community property states (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin) as Married Filing Separately (MFS) can be complicated.   Certain states have laws about community property defining how they expect MFS couples to share, or allocate, income. TurboTax has allocation screens and a worksheet to assist you in entering any adjustments your community property state may require when filing separately.  For more information, please review this TurboTax FAQ.

If you have two TurboTax Online accounts, you have to pay separately for each account. When you have to file multiple tax returns, it's usually less expensive to use the desktop TurboTax software. You pay for the software once and you can use it for multiple returns. There is an additional charge for each state e-file, but it still usually works out to be less expensive.

As the subject states, our tenant was failing at the upkeep in lawn care in our residential rental property. Appreciate the advice. Thank you.

You will need to enter it to claim tax credits.   If you can't locate it, file an extension.   You’ll need to search through your personal records to find your SSN or request a new Social Security card.   If you have a copy of a tax return where you claimed your son as a dependent, the SSN may be listed there.  Check school and doctor records too.   If you can't locate either of those, you can contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to request a replacement card or verification of the SSN.
