ah, the old "phantom 1099" trick  - - that was a good one a few years ago, I'll bring it back. Thanks.

Were you able to resolve this issue? EmployER contribution to a solo 401k is a business expense and therefore should reduce tax liability. This is not being reflected on turbo tax. Deferral is zero because I already contributed $23k under my w-2 employee contribution. Can anyone help?

I'm getting the same message. Filing in IL and MO (IL resident, employer in MO, but they sent 2 versions of @w-2, one with a portion for IL and one for MO as I worked remotely for more than half the year). Initially I entered everything just as it appeared on the W-2's, but because my remote work IL wages were higher than MO, Turbo Tax seemingly had a bug that wouldn't allow me to eFile. It was saying "Form MO-NRI: TP Remote Work Income should not be greater than total Missouri wages entered on your federal return". turbo Tax seemingly had a control where if the employer broke out the wages between 2 states and the non MO state was higher, it throws an error disallowing efiling. To get past this I updated the IL and MO numbers to be the same as the federal and then just used the MO remote work section to divvy up the income earned while working in MO vs the remote income when I was working remotely in IL. That seemed to correct the error on the MO side, but then it brought about an odd situation the original poster mentioned here - cannot eFile when sum of IL wages plus out of state wages on all W-2's does not equal total wages reports on IL Schedule CR.  My wife had a similar situation where her employer is in MO and she did remote work in 2024, BUT that employer put all of the income in MO and only took out MO taxes. The system seemed to have no issue with that. Seems Turbo Tax has some work to do in coding their system to properly handle when an employer monitors in which state work happens and issues multiple W-2's to address it. Or they at least need to give us some sort of workaround that still allows us to eFile. Now it looks like I have to manually file my IL return.

I have double and triple checked the estimated Federal and State tax entry, yet the State for some reason shows that I paid $1909 more than I did.    I found this after going thru the CA section titled "Here's the income that Ca handles differently."  After selecting "Done with Adjustments" I get a page stating, "Take a Look at California credits and taxes."  Directly below that in a shaded blue box is a statement that says "Estimated Tax Payments." and to the right is a value that is $1909 more than I paid.     What am I missing? I thought maybe because Ca only has estimated taxes paid 3 times vice 4 its pulling in a bogus value?  But I filled in the 4th period with zero $s to no avail.   And yes, this puts me at a dead stop for filing and politely paying the Feds and the State lotsa money. LOL.

@jmontalvo1964 wrote: i need 2023 tax returns This answer assumes your 2023 return was prepared in Online TurboTax.   Any return prepared in desktop TurboTax will not be in an Online account.  Here's how one would normally find past-year online returns and how to troubleshoot for multiple accounts (User IDs) if necessary.  Many people end up with more than 1 account.  The pathway to download the PDF depends on whether or not you have started an online 2024 return.  I provide both scenarios below, so choose which one is appropriate for your situation.   If you have not yet started a 2024 online return: Sign in to your account.   What you see next depends on whether or not you have already started a 2024 return in that account.   If your left column menu is minimal, and does not have a Tax Home tab displayed, that would imply you have not started preparing a 2024 return in that account.  If you haven't yet started a return, it will start asking you some questions.  Answer those preliminary questions (you don't actually have to prepare a return), and then when you are far enough into the process the left menu column will change, and you'll then see a Tax Home option.  Do not click the Documents tab.  Instead, click on Tax Home.  Then on the Tax Home screen, scroll way down to the bottom to "Your Tax Returns & Documents".  Expand that section and choose the past year you want.   If your past returns are not shown there, then you likely have multiple accounts and signed into the wrong one.  I'll tell you below how to troubleshoot.   If you have already started a 2024 return: Log in, and if you've already started a 2024 return in that account, then it may already open at the Tax Home.  If not, click the Tax Home tab in the left column menu.  Do not use the Documents tab.  At the Tax Home scroll down and expand "Your Tax Returns & Documents."   If the past returns are not there, see the steps below.   If you do all that and can't find the past return, here's how to look for multiple accounts: You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes.  A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be.  It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.   To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below.  When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it.   After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access. NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session. https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access,  here's another method:          Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by other parameters.

I live and earn all of my income in CA, and my spouse lives and earns all of her income in VA. We've filed our joint federal return easily enough as well as her VA return. Since I earned no income in VA, that state required her to file MFS and it was as easy as making a dummy federal return with her documentation to ensure that the input for her state return, which we printed for paper filing, is all correct. Working on the CA state return is a little trickier, though. Since we're married, do we have to consider her VA income as part of our overall income on the CA return? If so, and she's already paid her taxes in VA on that income, will CA simply ignore her income? Can we just leave it off as my income only was earned in CA and hers was earned and taxed in VA? I filled out CA taxes with a dummy federal like we did for her VA, but I wanted to make sure omitting her was OK because the community aspect of CA income rules is confusing us.

Ok so my "Wages & Income" section looks good now (I see the 1099-R 8J and I added the [2a] Taxable Amount to the "Corrective distributions made before the due date of the return". It's not warning me about a 10% penalty anymore.   Now in the Deductions & Credits section it's asking me to "Enter Your Roth IRA Contributions"... I assume I should just put 0 for all of this? Since technically I made no contributions this year (they were all removed). I went ahead and said 0.   A few screens later it asked me to "Enter Excess Contributions", so once again I said 0.   Then another screen titled "Contributions Withdrawn Before the Due Date", again I said 0.   And the final screen "Your IRA Deduction Summary" has a "Your IRA Deduction" of $0.   I guess all those questions were just to determine if I qualify for any tax breaks from contributions (of which there are none), right?

First year dealing with 1098-T & 1099-Q and should have asked for distribution in student (beneficiary) name to simplify tax reporting. Need to sort out who should file what. Does student file the 1098-T and parent file the 1099-Q (or something else)?   When parent (529 owner) filled out Turbotax, there was a pop-up with instructions how to report this as Turbotax indicated student had taxable income. I cannot find that pop-up and even going through the interview again, it does not pop-up.   Background info: 1098-T reported tuition and educational expenses ~$12,000 (box 1) with scholarship ~$7,040 (box 5) in student's name/SSN. 1099-Q reported $10,000 (box 1) distribution roughly 55-45 basis-earnings in parent (owner) name/SSN. Remaining tuition and educational expense after scholarship is $4,960 ($12,000 - $7,040).  529 distribution not covering 1098-T tuition and educational expense is then $5,040 ($10,000 - $4,960), so is taxable. However, room & board was $11,000 which more than covers the $5,040 remaining 529 distribution, so the $5,040 is no longer is taxable. Parent is not eligible to claim any educational credits due to income and no tax benefit for claiming student as a dependent also due to income. Student (single taxpayer) has minor earned income <$2,000 and unearned income <$100. However, if not claimed as a dependent on parent return, student can qualify for AOC credit ($50).   Based on this background, it appears the student should file as a dependent that will NOT be claimed by someone else (parent) and include the 1098-T in their return. Parent should not claim student as a dependent and file 1099-Q (as they were recipient, not beneficiary) in their return. Is this the best way to handle it?   Note: both 1098-T and 1099-Q both state information is being provided to the IRS. However, other community questions have been answered that the 1099-Q is not required to be filed.

The 2024 desktop program is only sold as a software download.  Initially there was no CD at all, BUT because many people wanted a CD, TurboTax decided to offer a CD copy for an additional $10, that can be used after one purchases the download.  The CD doesn't work without a license that comes with a download purchase.   You can purchase the download product directly from TurboTax at the site below, or from an authorized retailer like Costco, Sams, Amazon, where it may be cheaper.   If you want to purchase desktop software directly from TurboTax, you can do so at this page: https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/   Once purchased: FAQ:  How do I find my license code for TurboTax desktop? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/product-system-requirements/find-license-code/L4GHDgGpr_US_en_US   You don't really need the CD.   The program can be installed from the download, which is an executable installation file.  If you wish, you can archive the downloaded installation file on your own CD.   If you DO insist on a CD, however, here's where to get it for an extra $10.  But it won't work until you purchase a license. https://turbotax.intuit.com/lp/ttd/4021/

@Hal_Al  Hello, I am going thru turbo tax and trying to submit my students tax return for the IRS to have a record (based on what we discussed above) and realized they will be receiving a small refund ($72 from federal & $15 from state). I wanted to clarify when I enter the $9,435 as the amount they used to pay for R&B it puts their standard deduction as $12,285 - not the $14,600.  Does that sound right?  They had $2,400 income from summer job that they received a W2 for, plus the $9,435 we allocated from scholarship funds (so that total is $11,835) [It gives this small summary in regards to how they calculated the standard deduction] Your total income for the year was $11,835, including: - Wages, $2,400 - Other income, $9,435 You took the Standard Deduction of $12,285. After applying your deduction, your taxable income was $0. Based on this, your total tax before any credits was $0. You did not qualify for any tax credits.   Also, it is asking for me to "review a section" (that was never presented before now) while finishing up and it pops up and says: Form 8615: Parents last name must be entered: (then a blank box) so I fill my info,  then another box appears that says "Parents SSN" (I answer my ssn) then another box appears that says "Parent's marital status" and it has a section to check a box. then another box appears that says "Parents first name" (I fill it in) then the whole section disappears and I am not able to find this information again. I am not exactly sure if I have done something wrong or if this is really needed to file my students taxes. Can you please advise if this sounds right or if I have done something wrong and this form is not needed? (I did lookup this form and there seems to be several more questions in regards to our income, etc. that were never asked via Turbo Tax. So I am curious if its ok to submit it like this with just these 4 questions answered?  Thanks again.

@dgudgell wrote: I celebrated too early.  that did not fix my issue.  I will keep trying Sorry you're still having trouble.   That nearly always fixes it for Utah filers.  The usual problem with the Utah state withholding ID is the wth not being lower case.  Be sure there is not another form with Utah state withholding ID, such as a 1099.  If there is, it has to be lower case, too.   Sometimes recalcitrant W-2 errors can be cured by completely deleting the W-2 and then re-entering it from scratch.

Desktop software cannot be installed on an iPad.  It has to be installed on a full PC or Mac computer.   There is not a way to enter the license activation code for a desktop product in Online TurboTax.   The 2 products are not interchangeable.   If you don't have a computer and wish to use Online TurboTax instead, you should be able to get a refund for your desktop software purchase.   See if Costco will refund it (try that first--its the fastest, if they'll do it).  If they won't, then this FAQ tells 2 different ways to request a refund from TurboTax.   FAQ:  How do I request a refund for my TurboTax product? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/intuit-refunds/request-refund-turbotax-product/L834M6uyW_US_en_US

I managed to get the state program myself.   The problem I had was that I re-installed the TurboTax Premier 2024 program when my existing return already had both federal and state data.  After re-installation, the new TurboTax program noticed that I already had state information on my existing return and thought that I wanted to enter another state.  So it asked me to pay $45 for a new state.  Believing this was the issue, I started a brand new return, re-entered everything.  When I was done with the Federal part and was ready to enter the state, realizing my newly installed TurboTax software did not have a state program,  it automatically downloaded the state program for me. I am okay now...Thanks.
