Hello, I am a Green Card Holder, who moved permanently to the US in May, 2024, after getting married to a US citizen. Up until relocating to the US, I was working in my home country, earning an income there.  By the time I entered the US, I had already quit and was no longer employed. After a couple of months, I started working in the US. Do I need to report the income I had earned abroad prior to my relocation? Thanks!

Thanks. let me make sure I understand you. That is, we already file estimated taxes in Oregon (based on last years 1040s). What you are saying is that on 2024 Turbotax 1040 Form, we need to include the CA withholding in the estimated taxes paid section? Then, we file in CA and request a credit (tax refund) for those CA prepaid withholding taxes, so that we are not paying taxes on the same money in two states (OR and CA)?
Also check the area under "Your Home" in deductions and credits for Property Taxes only.  Is there a second entry of the amount here?

I am helping my parents with their taxes. They pay estimated taxes throughout the year based on what their financial advisor tells them.  In November 2024 they sold the large home they had lived in for 40 years, and owe tax on $126,000 of capital gains.  They paid a large amount of estimated tax to cover this in their fourth quarter estimated tax payment, to the point where they are due a $5500 federal refund.  However, TT has calculated a penalty payment for them which I don't think would apply since that money didn't come to them until late November and they didn't know they'd be selling their house until a month before that, hence they didn't make estimated tax payments to cover this until the sale went through.   Can we get rid of this penalty payment for both their federal and Virginia taxes?   Thank you.

You need to make sure you enter the health insurance payments in the right place. When you get done entering the information on your K-1 schedule, you will see a screen that says Other Situations, on which one of the options is I personally paid health insurance and/or long-term care insurance premiums for myself and my family and this S corporation paid me wages:     Then you will have to enter your Medicare wages and the health insurance premiums. The premiums should be listed in box 17 of Schedule 1 of your Form 1040.
Thank you for your response! I guess I was getting confused: the only income for this individual is social security payments and IRA distributions. The photo below is what I am referencing.    ... See more...

If you are having a problem opening the state return:   Try clearing your cache and cookies. A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax.  Sometimes you need to clear your cache to remove these temporary files. Here are the official instructions for the most popular browsers:   Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox Microsoft Edge Make sure you have run all updates to your TurboTax program.   If you're on a PC, open TurboTax and select Check for Updates from the Online menu near the top. On a Mac, simply quit and reopen TurboTax. If there are any updates, you'll be prompted to download them.   Tips: It's best to use a wired, high-speed connection when updating, both to save time and minimize data corruption. If your connection drops in the middle of the update, try again; it should pick up where it left off. If you're having trouble updating on your PC, try a manual update.   If you are stuck in a loop with your state return, try the following fix:   To resolve, close TurboTax and then: Download the TTStateCleanup.zip file and save it to your desktop or other easy-to-find location. Double-click to open the zip folder. Extract the contents of the folder to your desktop and open the extracted folder. Right-click the downloaded file (TTCleanStates.exe) and select Run as Administrator. Select your version (Personal or Business). Select your state from the dropdown menu and choose Remove (if you're having problems with multiple states, choose Remove all States). Once the tool finishes removing the state return(s), close it and reopen TurboTax. Follow the prompts to update TurboTax at the prompt. It should start downloading your state. If it doesn't, click the State Taxes tab and download it from there. If this fix fails: Uninstall TurboTax. Double-click the CD or download file to start the reinstallation process. Select Next on the welcome screen. Select I Agree on the License Agreement. On the next screen, where you see the install location, select Browse and change it to the location where TurboTax was originally installed (normally, it's something like C:Program Files (x86)TurboTaxDeluxe 20XX). Select Install after changing the location. Open TurboTax after installation and proceed to your state taxes. If the preceding steps don't resolve this issue, restart your computer in Selective Startup and run the tool again.

Did you enter the 2023 liability in TurboTax or make sure the amount entered was correct?   If you're using the TurboTax Desktop program you can review Form 2210 to see how the amount is calculating.     If you'd like, we can look at your return and see exactly what you see to help come to a resolution. The return will be scrubbed and won't include any of your personal details.   If you're using TurboTax Online: Once you're logged in to your account and have your amended return open, - on the left hand panel, click on Tax Tools and then choose Tools - on the pop up window, select Share my file with Agent - you'll see a message saying you'll give us a copy of your tax return. Your personal information will be changed so we can't see any private information. - click okay and you'll get another message with a token   If you're using TurboTax Desktop: Click on Online in the top menu of TurboTax Desktop for Windows Select 'Send Tax File to Agent' Write down or send an image of your token number and state then place in this issue. We can then review your exact scenario for a solution   Please reply to this message with your token so that we can further assist you. Let us know all other states that are included on the return.

You can safely use the date shown on your 1099-B.  "Inherited" is used for the "acquired" date field, primarily when the sale would otherwise be short-term.  "Inherited" in this field tells the program and the IRS that the holding period is long-term when the calculation by date alone wouldn't give a long-term "answer".  After the first year, many brokerage firms replace "inherited" with the date being used to determine the basis.   Since the securities are shown as covered then you shouldn't adjust the number in the basis box.  Instead, leave the imported data in the basis box so it matches the IRS database and then enter the correct basis after checking the box "the cost basis is incorrect or missing on my 1099-B".

Okay, so do not put any of the occupations that I received my W-2s for last year, put "unemployed" for my current employment status? I spoke with someone on TurboTax and they asked if I can leave it blank? Is it better to leave it blank? I just want to make sure before I submit my return.
Thank you for the response. I tried what you suggested. A list of all my forms appears except for the 1098! Please advise?
Yeah, but how do I find the value to put in there?
You should be able to decline that consent and move forward in your TurboTax Program. The consent is only for one year.   Here is the Intuit Privacy Center: https://www.intuit.com/privacy/

@VolvoGirl has cited the correct pricing for Desktop state programs and state e-filing. See also this TurboTax products page.   If you select Pay with My Refund to pay your TurboTax fees, there’s an additional $40 processing fee charged by the third-party bank that handles the transaction.   Once your e-filed return is in pending or accepted status, it's too late to remove Pay with My Refund. But if your return is rejected, you have another opportunity to remove Pay with My Refund.   If you haven't filed yet, you can change your payment method in TurboTax Online following these steps:   Sign in to your account and open or continue your return. Select File in the left menu and proceed to the Just X more steps screen. On this screen, select Revisit next to You've chosen to deduct your TurboTax fees from your federal refund. Select View Payment Options on the next screen and select Pay now on the screen after that. Complete payment by entering your credit or debit card information. Continue to the Just X more steps screen to make sure the Pay With My Refund has been removed. Step 1 on the screen should now show that you paid with your credit or debit card. See this help article for more information.   @Helen552
