I filed an amend on my return and uploaded my 1099R form but I think I checked a couple wrong boxes because the IRS states they were unable to process my amended return because they can't verify the income or withholding amount claimed which it shows it all on the 1099R form I uploaded and sent to them.

Hi All.  Seeing differing online opinions on this question.  I have a regular W2 job.  I also own rental real estate as a side business in Schedule E, not employed by that business though.  I have a qualifying home office for the rental real estate business.  Can I deduct all vehicle miles to AND FROM the property locations from my home office as the business owner, or am I limited in my deduction from my home office TO the properties, BUT NOT BACK as they may be considered secondary job locations?  Thanks in advance! Steve

In a test return I completed, any increases inputted into TurboTax flow to Form 104, Line 8. This increases my total Colorado taxable income. The backup statement in TurboTax state they are Colorado adjustments from Partnership and Fiduciary K-1s. Instructions for Form 104 state that these adjustments are increases to federal taxable income and any other Colorado additions from Line 11 in Column A on any Colorado K-1 (DR 0106K) issued to you by a partnership or S corporation.    To summarize, Line 11 of DR 0106K name the following additions: The partner’s distributive share of any addition required for non-Colorado state or local bond interest;  Business expenses deducted by the partnership in the calculation of federal taxable income for wages or remuneration paid to an unauthorized alien for the physical performance of services in Colorado; Expenses deducted by the partnership in the calculation of federal taxable income that were incurred with respect to expenditures made at, or payments made to, any club that is licensed pursuant to section 44-3-418, C.R.S., that has a policy to restrict membership on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, race, creed, religion, color, ancestry, or national origin. In addition, as summarized here, If the CO K-1 on any line is more than the federal K-1, you will enter the description of the line in the long box on the Increases section and the adjustment (increase) amount to get to the CO amount.  Alternatively, if a line on the CO K-1 is less than the federal K-1, you will enter the description of the line in the long box on the Decreases section and the adjustment (decrease) amount to get to the CO amount.   If none of these situations apply, then there would be nothing you need to enter.    @Cincolo

In order to claim the Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit for 2024, individual taxpayers must complete Form 343, as well as Form 301 with their Form 140.    If you received a certificate from the Arizona Department of Revenue, a copy of the certificate must be included with Form 343. This was likely the required document that was missing from your return. This document also lists the amount of your 2024 credit, which is needed to accurately fill out the form.    Your current year credit and available carryover from Form 343 is then listed on Form 301, Line 16. If Form 343 is incomplete, Form 301 would not be completed. It is likely this was the error that Arizona found with your return.   Since it seems you did not get your Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit, you should amend your state return by following the instructions here. Once you enter the information required for Form 343, as well as attach proper documentation, Form 301 should automatically be completed with the correct amounts and your error should be fixed.

I finally reached someone at the IRS who answered the questions. It'll be a couple of months before I know if they were correct, but in case anyone else has the same issues, here's what I found:   First of all, reaching someone on the phone was much harder than it should be - not because of hold times (they have a call-back feature so you don't have to stay on the phone), but because it's not clear how to navigate the voice prompts. I tried saying "question about form 56", but that sent me to the form-ordering department, where the worker's only advice was "next time, don't say a form number or else you'll be transferred here."   I tried other responses, but none were recognized. Eventually, on another call a week later, I got so frustrated I accidentally said "question about form 56" again. But this time, the person in the forms department was experienced enough to know the secret. "Say "account-related question", she said, "and that should get you to someone who can answer your questions." She was right!   Since I live far from my parents, and getting their signatures for a change-of-address form would be all but impossible, the IRS rep said to do this:   1. File a form 56 for each parent. In about 30 days, I'll receive confirmation letters.   2. Then I can sign a change-of-address form (8822) as their representative, and use my mailing address.    3. I will be able to create online IRS accounts for each parent. Since my name will be on their accounts, I can verify my identity while setting up the accounts. (I confess to being a little skeptical about this. I really hope the IRS rep was correct.)   I could have put my mailing address on their tax when doing it in TurboTax, as @guywong said. A cousin told me he's been doing this for his parents, and it hasn't been a problem. Fingers crossed all of this works.
Can you please post a screenshot (with no personally identifiable information shown) so I can report the error accordingly?

According to Indiana Code Title 6. Taxation § 6-3-2-28, any taxpayer claiming this deduction must submit the documentation that is deemed necessary to calculate the amount of the deduction. There is no further detailed requirements in the tax code or in the instructions to the tax return. Due to this uncertainty, it may be best to reach out to the state directly for additional guidance. There may be a couple different reasons that the credit was disallowed. You should be getting a notice in the mail from the state stating the reason for the adjustment shortly.    The first reason may be due to backup documentation. According to the state, you are required to include backup documentation for the repayment with your filed tax return. Did you submit this with your return? Administrative Release 40 states, The required documentation, which should be included with the Maryland income tax return filed for the year the repayment is made, is a copy of the document which states that the taxpayer must make the repayment, and a copy of the document which provides evidence that the repayment was actually made.    Secondly, the credit is only considered valid if you appeared to have unrestricted right to the income in the prior year and repayment was made because you did not actually have that right. However, if it is found that you did have full rights to the income and then later became responsible for paying it back due to subsequent events, then the credit will be disallowed.

Since we cannot see your return or the notice you received from the IRS, we are not sure of the reason for the adjustment. You will have to read the letter received and go through your tax return to determine why the AGI calculation was different.     The letter received should give you the detail needed to determine whether the changes made by the IRS are correct and whether you owe the calculated payment due. If you do not agree with the changes made, the letter will also provide instructions on what to do if you disagree with the notice.
