To get a SS number you would have to start an immigration process that can be long and costly.  Getting an ITIN, although it takes time is probably the easiest and the IRS does not charge for it.  Per the IRS Form W7 Instructions, you may need an ITIN if you’re a:   Nonresident alien claiming a tax treaty benefit Nonresident alien filing a U.S. federal tax return Resident alien filing a U.S. federal tax return Dependent or spouse of a U.S. citizen/resident alien Nonresident alien student, professor or researcher filing a U.S. federal tax return or claiming an exception Dependent or spouse of a nonresident alien U.S. visa holder Instructions for Form W-7

If you answer No on the page that says less than $3K, the next screen shows Claim of Right repayment over $3K.   However, neither of those screens will get you a deduction unless you are itemizing your deductions.      If you don't itemize, you take the standard deduction, your only option is to take the credit.   See the instructions for Taking the Credit in TurboTax Desktop if you don't itemize and want the credit.   It is a two step process, but can be done easily with the desktop software.

Make sure are using these guidelines and following the instructions. It doesn't sound like you are amended, but completing a new return.    If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.    You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed. You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return. Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return. The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected. You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment Select your product below and follow the instructions.  Amend TurboTax Online  Amend TurboTax CD/Download

1. I really don't.  The resident/non-resident stuff is difficult and uses two different forms.  Just file the one you should have filed originally. 2. The correct return should never impact anything negatively. 3. If you used Sprintax originally then the change should be able to be handled by that program.  The IRS takes their time with amended returns.  It can take years.  Here is a tool to track your return after you have submitted it. 4. Yes. 5. The forms that you already submitted can't be changed.  The only changes come from new forms that you are submitting.   @user123450

@Noah18 wrote: If someone is a licensed/ordained clergy and works for a ministry non-profit in a clergy-related role (but they do not work for a church), can they receive a housing allowance as long as their employer gives them a letter that they have designated a portion of their salary as a housing allowance? (like the jail chaplain example being discussed)   Maybe.  Generally, you must be performing ministerial services.  See publication 517.  It's not clear what you mean by a "ministry non-profit".  .   Ministerial Services Ministerial services, in general, are the services you perform in the exercise of your ministry, in the exercise of your duties as required by your religious order, or in the exercise of your profession as a Christian Science practitioner or reader. Income you receive for performing ministerial services is subject to SE tax unless you have an exemption, as explained later. Even if you have an exemption, only the income you receive for performing ministerial services is exempt. The exemption doesn't apply to any other income. The following discussions provide more detailed information on ministerial services of ministers, members of a religious order, and Christian Science practitioners and readers.   Ministers Most services you perform as a minister, priest, rabbi, etc., are ministerial services. These services include: Performing sacerdotal functions; Conducting religious worship; and Controlling, conducting, and maintaining religious organizations (including the religious boards, societies, and other integral agencies of such organizations) that are under the authority of a religious body that is a church or denomination.   You are considered to control, conduct, and maintain a religious organization if you direct, manage, or promote the organization's activities. A religious organization is under the authority of a religious body that is a church or denomination if it’s organized for, and dedicated to, carrying out the principles of a faith according to the requirements governing the creation of institutions of the faith. Services for nonreligious organizations. Your services for a nonreligious organization are ministerial services if the services are assigned or designated by your church. Assigned or designated services qualify even if they don't involve performing sacerdotal functions or conducting religious worship. If your services aren't assigned or designated by your church, they are ministerial services only if they involve performing sacerdotal functions or conducting religious worship.

It depends. Generally, excise taxes can't be deducted on your personal return. This includes things like fuel taxes and excise taxes paid to your city or state when you sell your home.   However, some states and localities erroneously label excise taxes as personal property taxes, which may be deductible. For example, some states refer to certain vehicle registration fees as an excise tax.   Excise taxes imposed on personal property (vehicles, campers, boats, RVs, etc.) are an allowable deduction if two conditions are met: The excise tax is determined by the property's value, usually a set percentage. The excise tax is imposed annually. Your best option is to contact the company that sent you Schedule K-1 to determine why they paid excise taxes. If this tax meets the requirements for personal property taxes, you would enter this under Deductions & Credits >> Property (Real Estate) Taxes.
Thx. I will research this form 2210 and requirements.

Paid all owed taxes quarterly except the roth was done (timing) in Dec and paid the taxes owed (shy $150) in December. so just 4Q was short.  Some how the roth amount was spread across each of the earlier quarters which caused the taxes to be under for prior quarters. Why is is prorated backwards when conversion was done in Dec?
I'd also like to ask if it would be wise to amend the return? Does the IRS actually go back to previous years looking for things?

I am attempting to my amend my 2023 taxes due to forgetting to add my schools 1098 T form. I have the Turbotax download and it allows me to add the form- however on the 1040 form it did not carry over my W2 information to determine if I qualify for the education credit.   Do I need to re-enter my w2 with the amendment (no information changed on it) so that it can determine my new refund?

hello,  I don’t know where to start with the process. I submitted my tax returns for the year through chime. which I thought was partnered with TurboTax but it is not. But chime did not allow me to put in my amount made for the year so now I’m getting 0 dollars back. I spoke to a TurboTax expert and with my actual numbers from my income last year I’m supposed to be getting back 1,200. I’m not sure how to fix this. Through google searches it seems I should amend my taxes? Please help.
