If you didn't take your required minimum distribution (RMD) during the year, you would need to report that on part IX of Form 5329 and pay a penalty tax on the excess balance in your retirement account. If you enter a Form 1099-R, you can report any RMD shortfall during that entry, by listing an RMD that is more than the distribution listed on that Form. If you do that, TurboTax will complete the Form 5329. Otherwise, you would have to use the desktop version of TurboTax where you can go to the Form 5329 and complete part IX by making entries directly on the form. Also, you can correct the failed distribution by withdrawing the RMD by the due date or your tax return and you will likely not be penalized. You must make entries on the Form 5329 to do that as follows: You can process the form 5329 in the TurboTax desktop software. You can use the Tax Tools option on your left menu bar while you are working on your return to then bring up Tools, which will have an option to Save your return to your computer so you don't need to start your online return over in the desktop version of TurboTax. In the desktop TurboTax product, use the Forms menu option to bring up Form 5329. Scroll down to Part IX, line 52 and enter your required minimum distribution amount. Enter the amount of any RMD you took in line 53. Use the Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet below line 53 to enter the amount you want to exclude from tax, and click on the Explain box to enter an explanation of why you missed making the distribution. You won't have to pay the tax for not taking your RMD on your return, pending a determination from the IRS later on.

The account owner and social security number must match. Verify the owner of each account. If your spouse is not the owner, it will not be allowed. You should each have an account. If you are the only owner, you should amend last year and claim the full $1500. You can claim up to $2,400 per individual.

The most reliable way to remove this income in the current software version is to enter a manual adjustment in the Other Non-Wage Income section.
Go to the State Taxes tab and begin (or "Update") your New Jersey return.
Continue through the interview until you reach the screen titled "Any Other Non-Wage Income?" (This is usually right after the interest/dividend screens).
Enter "Exempt University Fellowship" (or "Fellowship reported on Federal return")
Description: "Exempt University Fellowship" (or "Fellowship reported on Federal return")
Amount: Enter the amount as a negative number (e.g., -5,000).
This will create a subtraction on your NJ-1040, Line 26 (Other Income), effectively canceling out the fellowship income that TurboTax automatically pulled from your Federal 1040.

You have the option to use Easy Extension (a separate TurboTax website) rather than filing from within your TurboTax product if you choose.
However, you can file the extension within your return following the procedures below and it won't transmit your tax returns with it.
To file Form 4868 in TurboTax to request an extension on time to file your tax return, select your situation:
TurboTax Online: follow these instructions to e-file your extension.
TurboTax CD/Download software: follow these instructions to print Form 4868.
Keep in mind: An extension doesn't give you extra time to pay your taxes, but it'll keep you from getting a late filing penalty. (You'll still owe interest if you pay after the deadline.)
If you wish to add TurboTax Live Assisted (formerly Expert Assist) to your online return, select the Live Tax Advice/Expert Help button within the app to upgrade, enabling on-demand advice, screen sharing, and a final expert review. This service connects you with tax experts for personalized guidance, available 7 days a week during tax season. The advice will be limited to issues pertaining to the preparation of your tax return (i.e., the assister will not be authorized to provide general financial advice).

I am attempting to file my daughter's (dependent in college) taxes. I am answering the questions in the easy step process regarding: Did the student complete 4 years of post secondary education as of 1/1/2025? Was this student enrolled at an eligible education institution? Was this student enrolled in a program that leads to a degree, certificate, or credentials? etc. The only answer that is propagated on to the sheet - Person on Return is the first question, no other answers are being carried forward. I am seeing this problem in other areas as well with my own form. Please advise if I am to over ride the software and manually answer the questions in the forms or is there another approach to justify my paying Intuit for the software year after year?

It's not the 5 digit PIN. The AGI must come from an originally filed federal return. If by chance you amended, you need the original AGI. Next the PIN is any 5 digit number and you can change it any and every year if you wish. The zip code is always easy, but you choose the 5 digits that work for you.

I don’t want to have to pay the extra money that I paid to get my tax return sooner when I am almost at the 21 day limit that the IRS itself gives to get your refund back.

@be18 wrote: I am using new computer and turbo tax 25 says it cannot find my 2024 turbo tax file even though I had the 2024 files transferred to the new computer Are you using a Mac computer or Windows PC? When you transferred files to the new computer, was it the *.tax2024 data file, a 2024 PDF, or both? If you copied the 2024 data file to the new computer, do you remember the directory location where you placed the data file on the new computer? We don't know what you're using, but on a Windows PC the default location for the TurboTax data files is the Documents\TurboTax folder, but in moving to a new computer, you could have placed them anywhere. Search your entire system for any file ending in *.tax2024 or you can also search for all files with the *.tax extension. The method to do that differs a bit between Windows and Mac. Without knowing the operating system, there's not much more to say yet.
