Losing your job and using your 401(k) to pay rent or household bills doesn't  automatically qualify for an exception to the 10% early withdrawal penalty.    For a 401(k), the 10% penalty is waived only in specific situations such as:   Age 55 Rule (Separation from Service): If you leave your job during or after the year you turn 55, you can take penalty-free withdrawals from that specific employer's 401(k). Permanent Disability: Total and permanent disability allows penalty-free access. Medical Expenses: Unreimbursed medical expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO): Funds transferred to an ex-spouse in a divorce. Substantially Equal Periodic Payments (SEPP): a schedule of payments based on life expectancy. IRS Levy: Distributions due to an IRS levy on the plan. Death: Beneficiaries can withdraw without penalty. Military Duty: Active duty reservists may qualify for exemptions. If none of these apply, the 10% penalty generally applies in addition to regular income tax.

You cannot  change banking information while your return is in pending, nor can you change it after the return is accepted.  The IRS does not allow it.       Did you already e-file?  If you did NOT e-file you can go to the FILE section  step 2 to enter/change how you want to receive your refund.  If you want direct deposit you need the routing number and your own account number.    If you e-filed: Banking information for direct deposit is wrong or closed If you entered incorrect banking information for your refund, you can change it if your return is rejected.  If it is accepted, however, it is too late to change it.  The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS.     https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/news/tax-tips/direct-deposit-changes-for-2026-could-affect-how-and-when-you-get-your-refund/2026/01/   If you take NO action—-the IRS will freeze your refund for at least six weeks and then mail you a check.   If your refund is sent back to the IRS—- make certain that the address you entered on your Form 1040 is correct.  And…open all mail, even if it looks like junk mail.

The amend return option may not be available this early in the tax filing season, but it should be available soon. You just need to check back on another day.

You can process the form 5329 in the TurboTax desktop software. You can use the Tax Tools option on your left menu bar while you are working on your return to then bring up Tools, which will have an option to Save your return to your computer so you don't need to start your online return over in the desktop version of TurboTax.   In the desktop TurboTax product, use the Forms menu option to bring up Form 5329. Scroll down to Part IX, line 52 and enter your required minimum distribution amount. Enter the amount of any RMD you took in line 53. Use the Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet below line 53 to enter the amount you want to exclude from tax, and click on the Explain box to enter an explanation of why you missed making the distribution. You won't have to pay the tax for not taking your RMD on your return, pending a determination from the IRS later on.

Can someone please verify that there is not a bug in the code. Thank you

If you do not have a W-2 you do not have to enter one in TurboTax.  As DoninGA says above, you can just move on to the next section.   Whether you need to file a federal tax return or not this year will depend on how much money you made in 2025, your age, and your filing status. You can review this article to determine if you have to file a tax return this year: Do I need to file a federal return this year?   Click here for Can I File an Income Tax Return If I Don't Have Any Income?
