My husband received a SSA-1099 for his deceased father. Box 1 is my husbands SSN. Box 2 has my husbands name, followed by OAO. Box 7, husbands name followed by OAO on the 1st row, 2nd row has his fathers name followed by deceased, followed by my husbands address. I think we have figured out already this is income to us and we need to include it on our own joint tax return. What we aren't sure about is when I start going through the questions on TurboTax, is whether this is considered a lump sum payment? And then it asks what year it's from. His father died in 2024, but box 3 on the 1099 states "Benefits for 2025." Is this considered a lump sum, and do I used 2024 or 2025 as the year?

I wasn't able to follow your instructions, but I ended up just clicking "Forms" at the top of the application, finding/searching for the 1099 MISC, and then going to Forms > Remove ... in the Mac toolbar. Removing the form solved the issue. I think I had started a 1099 MISC before finding the article that I linked in my original post, which I wasn't supposed to do. Thanks all.

Gifts given to family members, friends or other individuals are not deductible. Gifts received are not taxable to the person who received the gift, and are not entered on a tax return.
If your gift exceeds the yearly limit ($19,000 per individual) imposed by the gift tax rules, then you will need to complete a Form 709 gift tax form and send it to the IRS, although it is very unlikely that you will owe any tax.
TurboTax does not support Form 709. It is not an income tax form and would not be included as part of an income tax return.

I started over and was able to enter a 1099-R but Turbo tax wanted to do it through Form 4852 that required explanation of why this was necessary. I noted: Form 4852 How were the amounts calculated: Fidelity calculated the amounts Explain efforts to get the form 1099-R: Fidelity will send Form 1099-R in January 2027 Form 5329 - Explanation Statement Return of IRA contribution before the due date of the tax return. A return of excess contribution for calendar 2025 before the filing deadline. Form 8601 Did Not Generate Do these forms and responses seem reasonable 🙂

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities. There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.
TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. “21 days” is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2025 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
https://www.irs.gov/refunds
To track your state refund:
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr
If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing

If you are getting earned income credit on line 27 or additional child tax credit on line 28 You are subject to the delay required by the PATH act. Do not expect your refund before early March

Note: “Accepted” is not the same as “approved”. TurboTax tells you the e-file was accepted if the IRS deems that there is enough information on the return for them to take it in for processing. Only the IRS can approve of the refund, which is a later stage of processing. If the IRS approves your refund they will provide a date for the refund to be issued.

Rollover from an IRA annuity Trust to another IRA annuity Trust. Transfering entity says it doesn't need to file a 1099-R. I believe they have a viable reporting position for tax information reporting purposes, but I want to report the rollover to establish section 403(b) employee contibutions that were previously taxed for state income tax purposes and provide notice on 2025 Massachusetts return of the amount of such significant contributions for future Massachusetts income tax purposes. TurboTax instructions advise that a substitute Form 1099-R can be prepared based on the best information available from taxpayer's records, which I have. Should I simply add another 1099-R and attach a statement of explanation to the 2025 return? Or does TurboTax ask somewhere in the process whether I want to file a substitute Form 1099-R?

@whoim1noone55 , I am so sorry for your loss. I pray for the peace of the departed and consolation for the family.
This is your father's return -- everything pertains to him. It is just like a tax preparer doing his return -- everything is the filers/taxpayer -- only the preparer signs as the preparer and mostly the contact person. Ditto for you.
Note that if there are any refunds to be received , you need to file a form 1310 to have the amounts available to you. Of course , if his bank account is still open, the bank may accept the direct deposit ( unless they are aware of the passing) -- probate will seal all activities in the account.
My wife passed two years ago and I kept the account open till recently because of all the settlements/ bills / refunds etc. that went through for another year and half. Hopefully yours is an easier one.
Is there more I can do for you ?

Some states are fairly quick with refunds, while other states can take a long time processing returns--even several weeks--as they crack down on detecting fraudulent returns. Here are some things you should check: First, you need to be sure your state return was successfully filed. If you efiled, be sure your efiled state return was accepted. If you used Online TurboTax, you can check by looking at the Tax Home in your Online account. Or did you choose to file by mail instead? TurboTax does not mail it for you. If you chose that method, you have to print, sign, date, and mail it. The FAQ below tells how to check on a state refund. When you scroll down further there, you will see a link for your state. Your state's department of revenue page may have a FAQ that tells you about how long it normally takes in your state. My answer above tells how to regain access to the other account. Once you get back in the account you used for 2024, if your left column menu is minimal, and does not have a Tax Home tab displayed, that would imply you have not started preparing a 2025 return in that account. You would need to start one temporarily--just to get to the 2024 PDF. It will start asking you some questions. Answer those preliminary questions on a few screens (you don't actually have to prepare a return), and then when you are far enough into the process, the left menu column will change, and you'll then see a Tax Home option in the left menu column. Do not click the Documents tab. Instead, click on Tax Home. Then on the Tax Home screen, scroll way down to the bottom to "Your Tax Returns & Documents". Expand that section and choose tax year 2024.

If the deduction limit is $4,000 just enter $4,000. You can't get in any trouble for under reporting a contribution, whether it's deductible or not. Moreover, it's a state deduction, so the IRS isn't involved as it won't appear on your federal tax return. If the program doesn't like a $4,400 entry then the program should be more clear and say something to the effect of "Enter your 529 Plan contribution, but not more than $4,000".

@user17682656767 if during filling out the property expense details ( On Schedule-E ) you entered a ownership percentage of 1/3 -- 33.33%, TurboTax will then apply that percentage to most entries. Go back and remove the percentages -- I am assuming that your 1099-MISC is already configured for your ownership ( i.e. the figures are to be used as is or is 100% applicable)
