You will only need to check this box if you are applying for a tax credit or deduction in which your U.S. residency is a qualifying criteria, such as the Earned Income Credit (EIC). Are you receiving an error message in the software regarding that box being checked and/or your eligibility for certain tax benefits?
If so, you may need to check your inputs for interview questions in the Tax Home > Federal > Deductions & Credits menu screens that pertain to credits which have a minimum U.S. residency requirement, such as the EIC.
The IRS 2025 1040 and 1040-SR instructions What's New section (on page 6) helps explain the specific usage of that question box and when it is applicable to be used:
Main home was in the U.S. If your main home (and spouse if filing a joint return) was in the U.S. for over half of 2025, check the box on the front of Form 1040 or 1040-SR. Providing this information will help the IRS determine your eligibility for certain tax benefits, including the earned income credit.

I am assuming that you received a Form 1099-R in the 2025 tax year. If you received a distribution from a retirement plan, pension plan, IRA or insurance contract in 2025, you would have received a Form 1099-R to report such a distribution on your tax return. The Form 1099-R will have been sent to you from your employer or your retirement plan provider. After you start to enter your Form 1099-R information, a screen in TurboTax asks "Who gave you a Form 1099-R?" You would select "Financial Institution or other provider" unless your Form 1099-R is for a Federal Government Pension (in which case you would choose Office of Personnel Management CSA or CSF depending on which retirement Fund you are in) or U.S. Railroad Retirement Board if your Form 1099-R is for U.S. Railroad (RRB). But, most likely you will choose the first box, "Financial Institution or other provider." Click on the correct box and the box will turn green. Then click on "Continue." You will then continue through the screens and answer the follow-up questions regarding your Form 1099-R. Click here for Where do I enter my 1099-R? Click here for When to Use Tax Form 1099-R: Distributions From Pensions, Annuities, Retirement, etc. If you have additional information or questions regarding this, please return to Community and we would be glad to help.

Entered my Income from 5 different sources. 3 of those are showing Not Started even though I've entered the information AND completed all Step-By-Step instructions in the INCOME section. Sections still showing Not Started: Capital Loss Carryover Contracts and Straddles (form 6781) Schedule K1 All of these sections have negative values in them (representing net losses) All of these sections had net losses last year, with no issue then. So the information is correct, I just don't know if TT is erroneously flagging these as Not Started in this years online version (Premier, though the online platform is saying Premium.. is there a difference? ). I'm hesitant to finalize the return until I can be assured the the information I've entered is reflected in the final numbers.
