Filing

How can I find out if my 2024 taxes were filed?

Can my 2024 taxes be filed even if I didn't file 2023 taxes?

I am married but don't want to file as married.  Can I claim my child as my dependent?

Can I get the child tax credit?

What if I don't have my spouses social security number? Can I still file?

Will my filing send up a red flag that my spouse hasn't filed?

Filing

How can I find out if my 2024 taxes were filed?

Did you -- or your spouse-- file a joint return?

DID YOU E-FILE?

Did you e-file?   Did you go through all three steps of the FILE section and click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”

When you e-file your return you will get two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say your return has been transmitted; the second one will tell you the IRS has accepted  or rejected your federal e-file.  If you filed a state return, there will be a third email (usually a day or two later) that tells you if the state e-file was accepted or rejected.

Check your e-file status:

Can my 2024 taxes be filed even if I didn't file 2023 taxes?

Yes you can file a 2024 return even if you did not file a 2023 return.  Since you will not have a 2023 AGI to enter, you will need to choose the answer that says you did not file for 2023, or use "zero" as your 2023 AGI.  Or....print, sign and mail your 2024 return.

I am married but don't want to file as married.  Can I claim my child as my dependent?

If you were legally married at the end of 2024 your filing choices are to file married filing jointly or married filing separately.   If you and your spouse lived apart for at least the last six months of 2024 and you have had custody of the child, you may be able to file as Head of Household.

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

Can I get the child tax credit?

Maybe.  You have provided no information about your child.   If you had income from working, and you have a child under the age of 17 who has a Social Security number, you may be able to get the child tax credit.   If you are eligible for the CTC and/or additional child tax credit (the refundable part) it is added to your refund automatically.

What if I don't have my spouses social security number? Can I still file?

You will need to file by mail and indicate on the Form 1040 that your spouse's SSN is not available to you.

Will my filing send up a red flag that my spouse hasn't filed?

We cannot predict what might alert the IRS to your spouse's failure to file.   If your spouse had sufficient taxable income to owe tax,  and does not file, the IRS will be coming after them eventually no matter what you do.

Filing

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.    Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.  If your child was born in 2024 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

Have you entered income from working in 2024?  If not,  you will not receive an income tax refund based on having dependent children.

The maximum amount of the child tax credit is now $2000 per child; the refundable “additional child tax credit” amount is $1700.   In order to get that credit, you have to have income from working.

Take the amount you earned from working.   Subtract $2500.   Multiply the rest by 15%.  That is the additional child tax credit per child that you can get—- up to the maximum of $1700 per child.   If the amount you earned from working was low, you will not get the full $1700 per child.

If your child is older than 16 at the end of 2024, you do not get the CTC.  But you may still get the non-refundable $500 credit for other dependents instead.

AND….If you have children but had  little or no income, it raises the question of how you and the children were supported.  There may be another tax-paying adult who can claim you and/or the children as dependents.
