Amending a tax return

Hi

I need help amending my tax return that was filed by someone else, but it was not filed using Turbo tax.

How can I amend my return using Turbo Tax?

Also, I e-filed my original tax return. Is it possible to e-file an amended return through turbo tax?

You can only efile the Amended 1040X return from the same account you efiled the original return.  If you didn't use Turbo Tax you will have to print and mail the amended return.

Ideally you should go back to who did it and they should amend it for free if it was their error.

To amend a return you did somewhere else or you don't have the original.tax file,  you would first have to fill out Turbo Tax like you are doing the original return and pay for it.  You have to recreate the actual wrong original return.  Then when it matches each line that you really filed you have to tell Turbo Tax you will mail it so it thinks it was filed.  Then you can amend it.

For the current year you can use the online version by first recreating the original return exactly as filed.  Then pay the fees and say to mail it and print it out so it think you filed it.  Then when it matches every line you can amend.

Amending a tax return

You will first need to replicate your return in TurboTax so the results are identical to your originally filed return.   Do not e-file the return - select print and mail.    The next steps are below.
Here's a general guide on how to amend your tax return within TurboTax:
1. Access Your Tax Return:
  • TurboTax Online:
    • Sign in to your TurboTax account.
    • Navigate to "Your tax returns & documents" and select the tax year you need to amend.
    • Choose the "Amend (change) return" option, and then "Amend using TurboTax Online".
2. Begin the Amendment Process:
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to start the amendment process.
  • You might be prompted to confirm if you've already filed and received your refund (or paid your taxes due) from the original return.
3. Make Your Corrections/Changes:
  • TurboTax will guide you through the process of reviewing and making necessary changes to your return.
  • You'll likely see your original return displayed, allowing you to identify the areas that need correcting.
  • Make the necessary adjustments to income, deductions, credits, or any other relevant sections of your return.
  • TurboTax will automatically transfer changes you make to your federal return to your state return (if applicable).
4. Review and File Your Amended Return:
  • Carefully review all changes you've made.
  • Ensure all information is accurate and complete.
  • Follow TurboTax's instructions to e-file (if applicable) or print and mail your amended return (Form 1040-X).
  • You may need to attach supporting documentation depending on the changes you've made.
Important Notes:
  • Wait for Acceptance: Before amending, wait until your original return has been accepted by the IRS (or mailed if paper-filing).
  • Amend Only What's Necessary: Only make changes to the areas of your return that require amending.
  • Check IRS Status: You can check the status of your amended return on the IRS after a few weeks.   Here is the link:  https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return

Amending a tax return

No.  You may not e file a return that was not originally filed through TurboTax Online.

You are able to upload a pdf from other tax preparers directly into TurboTax Desktop version.  There are limitations to the transfer, such as depreciation.  It is best practice to review the upload carefully and make any adjustments necessary.
