[Event] Ask the Experts: Understanding IRS Notices
You will first need to replicate your return in TurboTax so the results are identical to your originally filed return. Do not e-file the return - select print and mail. The next steps are below.
Here's a general guide on how to amend your tax return within TurboTax:
1. Access Your Tax Return:
- TurboTax Online:
- Sign in to your TurboTax account.
- Navigate to "Your tax returns & documents" and select the tax year you need to amend.
- Choose the "Amend (change) return" option, and then "Amend using TurboTax Online".
2. Begin the Amendment Process:
- Follow the on-screen instructions to start the amendment process.
- You might be prompted to confirm if you've already filed and received your refund (or paid your taxes due) from the original return.
3. Make Your Corrections/Changes:
- TurboTax will guide you through the process of reviewing and making necessary changes to your return.
- You'll likely see your original return displayed, allowing you to identify the areas that need correcting.
- Make the necessary adjustments to income, deductions, credits, or any other relevant sections of your return.
- TurboTax will automatically transfer changes you make to your federal return to your state return (if applicable).
4. Review and File Your Amended Return:
- Carefully review all changes you've made.
- Ensure all information is accurate and complete.
- Follow TurboTax's instructions to e-file (if applicable) or print and mail your amended return (Form 1040-X).
- You may need to attach supporting documentation depending on the changes you've made.
Important Notes:
- Wait for Acceptance: Before amending, wait until your original return has been accepted by the IRS (or mailed if paper-filing).
- Amend Only What's Necessary: Only make changes to the areas of your return that require amending.
- Check IRS Status: You can check the status of your amended return on the IRS after a few weeks. Here is the link: https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return
