Stuck in Update Loop

I just completed my 2019 Federal and State taxes. When I went to transmit them, I received a message my version of Turbo Tax needed an update. I went to check for updates, the reply was that my version was updated. Hit transmit again, received the same message that I need an update. Stuck in an endless loop. What can I do to fix this?

Have you tried Rebooting and Restarting TurboTax?

How do we get out of this update loop?  It does this as it gets ready to check the federal tax return

The fix that worked for me was uninstalling and reinstalling TurboTax. I made a couple of copies of my saved data first... just to be safe.

I have the same problem. I have closed out, rebooted, relaunched, multiple times. I checked the forms that won't be updated until later in February, but none of them seem to apply to my return.

Please see the TurboTax FAQ TurboTax Desktop Windows: Update Loop at e-File for a workaround to help resolve the looping issue.

The first part of this answer makes no sense because it indicates that we are having trouble with the updates, but we have indicated that TurboTax is up to date. The second part, to uninstall and reinstall - we will lose everything we've entered?

Same problem. When I check for updates from the Online menu, it says the software is up to date, but it won't let me out of this loop so I can transmit the returns. Rebooted and restarted the program multiple times to no avail.

I’m having the same problem. The work around didn’t help.

So the answer to a desktop installation of a product is to clear the browser cache.......not that I thought it would work, but I tried. Any other inapplicable suggestions that will fix this?

I'm using Premier installed from CD. I tried restarting computer and network, which did not help. I tried manual update, which executed but did not solve the problem. HERE IS WHAT WORKED: I uninstalled then re-installed TurboTax from CD, then did an online update, then I was able to transmit my returns.

Didn't you lose all your data when you uninstalled and then re-installed?

I did not lose anything when I uninstalled and reinstalled. That didn’t solve my problem though.

It appears the problem fixed itself for me. I went back later in the afternoon and tried the Check for Updates thing again - lo and behold, there was an update sitting there from two days ago. I installed the update and was able to transmit my returns.

I ended up calling Turbotax support. I had to wait about 20 minutes for a call back. After walking me through the things I already done, she had been attempt to file just my Federal return. I went through just fine. She said there are some problems with the New York forms and they may not all be updated or ready for filing. She suggested just checking back periodically, which I will do. At least my Federal return is filed.

My problem was also with NY (see my post from yesterday). There was an update released on 2/6 but when I checked for updates it didn't see it.

I have been fighting with this for several days.  I found this fix and got to step 8, and the latest State Updates finally downloaded and allowed me to eFile.  The "TTStateCleanup.zip" file is what fixed it for me.  I "removed" my state, and it caused TurboTax to re-download my state with the updates.  I opened the program twice and it downloaded NY State updates each time (each update was different), and then I went to the efile section and was able to transmit my return.  BTW, I found out that you CAN e file your Federal.  You simply choose to e file Federal only, and it will go.  It was the STATE return that was holding everything up.  Then I went back and found this procedure, and was able to send my NYS return.  Hope this helps everyone!  See Below for how I got the NY state return to e-file:

State Loop indicates TurboTax is "up to date" after updating but won't allow you to start your state return

To resolve, close TurboTax and then:

    1. Download the TTStateCleanup.zip file and save it to your Desktop or other easy-to-find location.
    2. Double click to open the zip folder
    3. Extract the contents of the folder to your desktop and open the extracted folder.
    4. Right-click the downloaded file (exe) and select Run as Administrator.
    5. Select your version  (Personal or Business)
    6. select your state from the drop-down menu and choose Remove (if you're having problems with multiple states, choose  Remove all States).
    7. Once the tool finishes doing its thing, close it and reopen TurboTax.
    8. Follow the prompts to update TurboTax at the prompt – it should start downloading your state.
    9. If not, click the State Taxes tab and download it from there.
    10. If the fix-it fails, do this instead:
    11. Uninstall TurboTax.
    12. Double-click the CD or download file to start the reinstallation process with the following steps:
    13. Click Next on the Welcome Screen.
    14. Click I Agreeon the License Agreement.
    15. On the next screen, where you see the install location, select Browse and change it to the location where TurboTax was originally  Normally, it's something like C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Deluxe 20XX.
    16. Click Install after changing the location.
    17. Reopen TurboTax after installation and proceed to your state taxes.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue you're experiencing in TurboTax Please use the article below to restart your computer into Selective Startup and run the tool again.

    One more Thing.....

** the above article was entitled:  "State Loop indicates TurboTax is "up to date" after updating but won't allow you to Install your state return".  If you can't link to the TTStateCleanup.zip file from my post, look this article up and the hyperlink should work.

Just got their updated fix and it worked! Needed to contact them 2 times after trying all their other suggestions that DID NOT fix the problem. Received a manual update that was easy peasy once they told me that there was an update to be had. Had to do with the NY state return. Have been a customer for many, many years and this problem was very disturbing and frustrating to get corrected. Began on Saturday Feb 8th and finished Feb 12th

Here's the FIX via the TurboTax support person: I have the CD Deluxe version, so clearing cookies is not applicable. He first had me check my windows 10 for updates - which I had some pending, so I completed those. Then he had me check my McAfee antivirus for updates - which I also had one pending, so I completed that. He then sent a link to my email address for a MANUAL update of TurboTax. This takes a few minutes to install and prompts you through it. Don't run the TurboTax program till it is complete. Once it was done I started TurboTax and answered YES to install updates. I went to the final Transmit prompt and BOOM!, it worked perfectly! All done! I'm not sure which of the solutions actually did the trick or if all these steps were needed. Try your Windows and antivirus updates first and if that doesn't work call for the MANUAL update link to be emailed to you. Here's their number: [phone number removed]. Give them your case # if you have one for faster response. If they're backed up they are nice enough to call you back with the callback number you leave. Good luck!  Oh, by the way I tried uninstalling and re-installing the CD before all this but that didn't help. If you try a reinstall, back up your data to a different directory if you know how. I had to copy the 'cai' form (california) back over from the backup cuz it was expecting me to pay $39.99 for it. Also, if you reinstall the CD without erasing it first there is an option to 'repair' a previous install. I never tried that, but it could work. Don't worry, you can reinstall or uninstall the program without losing your data. It is stored in a different area (under Users). Also, another support person told me that this was an error message that occurred when the TurboTax servers were 'overloaded'. He had me turn off the Firewall to fix the problem, but that didn't do anything at all. I think he didn't know what he was talking about. Hmm. Anyway, good luck. Hope this helps!

Thank you.  I appreciate your help!
I went ahead and e-filed my federal return.

Will come back to work on fixing the glitch to e-file my Kansas return in a few days.

    Such a pain.

Best wishes  to you & yours.
