I want to select a different option for my education credit; the system forces the Lifetime Education credit. I want to use my tuition to lower my overall income.

Is there a way to "force" the system to run the other option?

Yes, there is. See the instructions below on how to use letme.

Generally speaking, the IRS only lets you take one education credit or deduction.

  • If you qualify for two or more education credits or deductions, the TurboTax Education Optimizer picks the one that gives you the biggest tax break.
  • To override  this selection, search for letme (one word, no space) in your TurboTax program's search box.
  • This will take you to the Education Credits and Deduction screen, where you can switch to a different education credit or deduction, assuming you meet the qualifications.

If this solution ever worked, it doesn't now. Selecting "jump to letme" just literally brings you to this Q&A page, and doesn't change anything.

I want to select a different option for my education credit; the system forces the Lifetime Education credit. I want to use my tuition to lower my overall income.

After typing> letme <in the search box, do not click on "jump to letme". Instead click on "letme". Then click on the  "jump to letme" link.

Does this work in TT Deluxe 2020 desktop verson? When I am in step-by-step mode and click the magnifying glass "Search" on the upper right, all it does is launch a pop-up "Turbo Tax Help" window. Searching for "letme" does not find anything.

When I go through the step-by-step - at the end I can see the various options (AOTC, Lifetime, etc) and they are shown as options, but you can't select which one to take.

It works in my 2021 Desktop Windows program.  Type in letme then hit the enter key and wait for the list below to fill in.  Jump to should be listed first.  Ignore the list that fills out until you hit the enter key.

OHHH - its the whole "Hit the Enter Key." ARGH. It gives you results before you hit enter and different results after you hit enter. UGH.

Thank you so much for the prompt response.
