Tuition and fees deduction

How do we deduct when the source of funds for our daughter's tuition comes from a separate source (relative in this case), but we (parents) pay for all the (substantial) fees and related education expenses?  We have the 1098-T statements, but entering all that information in TurboTax implies we paid for the tuition, doesn't it?

If you are eligible to claim your daughter as your dependent and do so, then you can claim all of her qualified education expenses-no matter where the money came from.

See Rules For Claiming Dependents

Also see Qualified Educational Expenses

To claim educational expenses as well as financial aid (if any)

  • Type in 1098-t in the search box, top right of your screen, then click the magnifying glass

  • Click the jump to 1098-t link in the search results

  • Follow to prompts and online instructions
