Tax Year Prior to 2020: The 1098-T that my daughter received includes medical school - how to include on tax return

My daughter graduated from a university in our state this past May.  She is attending medical school also at a state institution.  The 1098-T she received includes both the undergrad and medical school payments and scholarships.  When I enter the 1098-T into our tax return (she is our dependent for 2019) it seems to be using the entire amount the tax credit we are due.  This does not seem correct as we are not able to use her medical school expenses for the tax credit.  The 1098-T does not have box 9 checked for graduate student.  At this point, I am not sure how to use this to file our tax return - just enter what shows on the form?

what is in Box 1 and what is in Box 5? ( I assume there is just 1 1098-T as her undergraduate university and her medical school are the same institution????)

what tax credit are you expecting?

The total payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses is in box 1 and for scholarships or grants in box 5.  That includes payments and scholarships for both campuses.  Technically they are different institutions but both part of our Nebraska state university system, so the 1098-T is from the board of regents.  There is a disbursement by campus section of the 1098-T that has a box 1 and box 5 for each institution.

We are looking to claim the American Opportunity Credit.

So, you haven't reached the four years' limit for you to still be eligible to claim the American Opportunity Credit? First of all, make sure you haven't exhausted the four year limit. You always have the option to claim the tuition and fees deduction and lifetime learning credit.
