My federal return was just rejected because of an error on Form 8863. I checked all the suggestions for what could be wrong (name, ss#, no complete address, etc) and the only thing I found wrong was on Page 2 of Form 8863, Question 22(3) that asks "Did the student receive a 1098-T from this institution in 2018 with box 7 checked? TT marked "no", but it should read "yes". On the other forms I've been able to highlight the box with the error and correct it, but not this time. TT won't let me make any changes to this section of the form. I went back through the entire education deduction section to see if I missed a question somewhere to no avail. Is there a way to force the answer to change? I think it's probably causing a problem because some of the tuition I paid in 2018 was for spring 2019 tuition (which is why box 7 is checked on the 1098-T for 2018), and further in the education section interview it asks if some of your scholarship money my daughter received was for a prior year, where I had to answer yes (it was money for spring 2019 tuition). Any solutions? I think it will just get rejected again if I don't change it.

I figured out how to change it directly through the form. Although form 8863 will not let you change anything, you can change the information on your 1098-T that you received from the school. On that form I could change the answer from "no" to "yes", and that transferred that answer over to form 8863. Also, I noticed that TT phrases the question as you go through the interview questions as "Did you receive a 1098-T from this school in 2018 with box 2 and box 7 checked?" My 1098-T had an amount in box 1, box 2 was blank, box 7 was checked, so I answered no. When I look carefully at my 1098-T, it says box 1 and box 2 will NEVER both be checked off, only 1 or the other. So since box 1 has my child's tuition (which I assume if where most people's box is filled in) you will rarely be able to answer "yes" to the question posed above.

Before 2018 most of the Form 1098-T received from the educational institutions entered the Tuition in box 2 (Amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses). It was not until 2018 that they were forced to only enter the amount paid in box 1.
The TurboTax question wording has not been updated to reflect this change.
The question should ask, "Did you receive a 1098-T from this school in 2018 with box 1 and box 7 checked?".
By answering "YES" you entered the correct answer.
I tried this and was able to make the correction in Form 1098-T (changing the "No" to "Yes" in reference to Box 1 and Box 7 being checked in the 2018 form) but I continue to have the IRS reject my tax form (4 consecutive times). Any help or direction would be appreciated.
