If I pay for my car note, gas, personal items, school books, is that considered taking care of half my support

Maybe, maybe not. 
Go to the following link and complete the worksheet on page 16 of 30.  This is geared towards seeing if you paid more than half the support of someone else.  But you can answer the questions about yourself and how much you paid.  Or answer them from the perspective of your parents (or whoever else contributed to your support).
