Starting in 2022, taxable scholarship now goes on line 8r of schedule 1 instead of line 1 on form 1040 with "SCH".
You have to enter it in the education expenses section, to get it there. It's a long interview, but TT will allow you to enter scholataships even though you answer no to going to school (at most screens you can just press continue without answering the questions). When asked how much of the scholarship was used for room & board, enter the taxable (probably all of it) amount.
@Hal_Al Thanks for your help. I can't get it to offer me the section for scholarships without designating myself as a student (which I was not) and also entering a school name (which I was not attending as a student). I did not receive a 1098-T. As such I also have to say that I "qualify for an exception" - which doesn't really seem to apply to me in order to get to the section for scholarship income.
Is the section you were referring to in education expenses under "Other scholarships/grants/fellowships?"
This was a NIH training grant with a stipend that is taxable and was given to me via the university where I work. Previously it was required to report via "SCH" next to lie 1 on IRS form 1040. I do see now that it goes on line 8r of schedule 1 as you suggested. Is there a way to manually place it on line 8r of schedule 1 instead of erroneously marking myself as a student?
Or I can go through the above section as if I were a student, put in the name of the university where I work, and hope that that works?
Thank you for your help!
Q. Is there a way to manually place it on line 8r of schedule 1 instead of erroneously marking myself as a student?
A. No. That's possible in the download versions of TT, but not online.
Q. I can go through the above section as if I were a student, put in the name of the university where I work, and hope that that works?
A. Yes, that's plan B.
