How to modify 8863 page 2

We claimed 2016-2019 American Opportunity. He is still in school, no longer dependent, and not allowing worksheet updates to exclude Amer Opportunity Education credit.

If you claimed the AOTC for four (4) years on your joint return and he is no longer a dependent, then just delete the Form 8863 from your tax file - it no longer applies.

See: How do I delete forms in TurboTax Online?

After deleting the Form 8863, log out of the program. When you log back in, use the Delete a Form tool (List of Forms in My Return) to confirm it has been removed from your return.

Why does this happen? When you transfer the information from your prior year return, the program automatically includes certain forms in the current year - to make sure you don't forget to update those forms. If a form is no longer required (e.g. K-1s, Schedule C), you have to delete them from the current year.

Yes, a student can attend more than 4 calendar years of schooling and still not have finish the first four years of a degree.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit may only be taken 4 times per student. The number of times the parents claimed the AOTC count when the student is no longer a dependent. If parents claim it 4 times, the non-dependent student cannot claim it, the 4 times has run out.

Yes, thank you. I actually answered one of the questions wrong ... said No if earned Bachelor (correct) but should have said Yes (on 5th year). Thanks for checking.
