Dependent college and income

My son is 20 and a full time student that I am claiming.  He made 3,700 during the year.  Do I need to claim that amount on my return?   I also pay for his apartment rent, can that be claimed as room & board?

No, you will not report your son's income on your return.  Room & board are not qualified education expenses and therefore not deductible.

Your son would file his own return if required, but he would need to indicate that he is being claimed by you. The rules for when a dependent must file a return are included below.
