1098T confusion

I understand that education expenses and scholarships do not always land in the same tax year that they apply to. My daughter's last 1098T does not show qualifying expenses for 2019 because they were billed in 2018. Since there are no expenses to offset the scholarship in 2019 the scholarship is now considered taxable income it seems. However the type of scholarship she has is only able to be used for qualifying expenses and there is no excess. Since this type of scholarship is designed to not be taxable how is the fact that it has now become taxable rectified in the tax process?

1098T confusion

The IRS only requires you to report the data from Form 1098-T to claim a tax benefit or to report a taxable scholarship.  Since it sounds like you are doing neither this year, you should remove the form from TurboTax and keep it with your records.

Your records will be sufficient to demonstrate the matching of the expenses with the scholarship - it is not required to do so on your tax return.

To remove the form from TuboTax follow these steps:

  1. Login toTurboTax.com.Click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.
  2. If prompted, click on Continue where I left off or Take me to my return.
  3. Choose Deductions and Credits.
  4. Expand the Education section.
  5. Click on Revisit.
  6. On the Education Summary click Edit/Delete.
  7. Delete Form 1098-T.
