Writting off a rented car on 1099

  • So I deliver packages for a company that pays me as a 1099 contractor. I have to have my own vehicle. I need a large van, so I rent one from an agency. How would I go about deducting this expense on my taxes, since this expense does reduce my income extensively.

You would enter your vehicle rental expense in the Equipment Rental section of your Schedule C, or in the Miscellaneous Expense section if you wanted to enter your own description.

Since you do not own the vehicle, you cannot claim the standard mileage expense for the miles you drove.  However, if you have kept track of your fuel costs and the vehicle was driven only for business purposes, then the fuel expense may also be claimed as a Miscellaneous Expense.

There is no requirement to own the vehicle to use the Standard Mileage Rate.  It can also be used on leased/rented vehicles.
