How can I delete entries on the Gross Compensation Worksheet W-2 List item?

I am doing my son's taxes where he did an internship in PA for 2 months and lives in CA. Finishing up returns and got this error message that says I entered more w-2 than what was on my federal return. I am not sure what the issue is.

You'll need to go back to the federal return and review all of the W2 entries there.  One of them may have a typo.  More importantly, all W2s are required to be entered fully on the federal return no matter what state they are earned in.

Thank you for trying to help me. My son only worked in PA for a month but lives in CA. The employer provided a w-2 fed and for PA state and CA state.

Do I enter all three of these W-2's? Isn't this just tripling what he made in box 1 as they all say the same number and he only worked in PA.

I had only listed the Fed W2 with PA state income tax (item 17) Is this the mistake that I made? Should I list all three? I don't understand this.

On the federal return you're going to enter the federal W2.  At the bottom of the federal W2 you will enter the state information that is there in boxes 15 through 20.

Then do the following IN ORDER.

If you have started any state tax returns already delete them.

Add back the non-resident state (in this case Pennsylvania) ONLY if there is Pennsylvania information on the bottom of the W2.  If there is not then there is no need to file a Pennsylvania return.

If there is Pennsylvania information on the W2 then create a non-resident tax return for Pennsylvania.  Carefully go through the questions and tell the system that any other income on the return was earned outside of Pennsylvania.

THEN create the California resident return.  California taxes everything that any resident earns even if they earned it in Pennsylvania.  But California will also give a credit for taxes paid to another state.  So the California return will pull in a deduction from the Pennsylvania return that you already created and deduct those taxes from the California tax that is due.

That should get you done with filing tax returns for this year.
