Stimulus payments will be based on information from your most recent tax filings, either 2019, or 2018 if you haven't filed this season yet. But, the amount paid to you now will be reconciled on next year’s tax return based on your current 2020 situation.

IRS - Economic Impact Payments Information
Please help. I am at a loss. I don’t know what to do. 2018 filed over income for stimulus. Had to pay that year. Filed 2019 on March 27 and was accepted. Refund was added to 2018 tax balance. We qualify for stimulus with 2019 income guideline. However received nothing. I can not get any info from the portal. Says either no info at this time or locked out for 24 hours. Any suggestions? Really need the stimulus
I did not receive the correct amount. I received a very odd amount which was short 694.00. I am well under the household income and did not owe taxes previously.....What happened?
The IRS did they best they could. You have the 2020 tax return to correct the mistake. You will fill in what you received and the program will calculate the difference and add it to your refund.
After you have entered your tax information and are ready for the Federal Review, it will be the first question.
If you are trying to trigger it, you can go to Other Situations, answer any questions and click Done. The next automatic selection is Federal Review and will ask about payments received.
What do you mean by “they did best they could”? I don’t understand how it is the IRS’ decision to determine, they can take money the government gave them, to forward to us. Not to take from us, but to help stimulate the economy. This is absolutely unacceptable. What determines the amount they took?
The IRS is a government organization dealing with people that change kids, custody, addresses, etc. They never expected that all payments would be correct and successful. That is why you can get whatever is missing on your tax return this year.
I am not a part of the IRS, I did not help develop the tools, I don't know what they did to calculate your Economic Impact Payment. I only know that you can claim the rest now. When you fill in your taxes, you will come to the Federal Review section and you can fill in what you did receive. The program will calculate what you should have received and add it to your refund.
I have to agree, your numbers do seem bizarre with a $649 difference. I feel your frustration. I can only help with moving forward. Here is what the IRS published Get My Payment Frequently Asked Questions page .
