Is a nutritional supplement that's non-prescription but recommended by a professional to help with digestive issues a deductible expense?

I see conflicting answers on this because I've seen that many tax advisors say it is deductible and then i saw one answer on here from the IRS (or so they say) that you can't, which of course they are always going to tell you in their favor to get more taxes out of you.

No, nutritional supplements are not tax deductible.

Per IRS Publication 502, pages 11-12: Medicines: You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for prescribed medicines and drugs. A prescribed drug is one that requires a prescription by a doctor for its use by an individual. You can also include amounts you pay for insulin.

  • Except for insulin, you can't include in medical expenses amounts you pay for a drug that isn't prescribed.
