Someone used my dependents on their tax returns
Someone else claimed my dependent and my return was rejected
If someone else claimed your dependent already, then your e-filed return will be rejected. Print, sign and mail your own return which claims your dependent. Mailed returns are processed differently by the IRS. It will take some time (maybe even up to a year) but eventually the IRS will contact both parties and sort out who could rightfully claim the dependent. The person who wrongfully claimed the dependent will face repayment of refund $, plus penalties.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

To access your current or prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)
See this TurboTax support FAQ for accessing prior year online tax returns - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-access-my-prior-year-return/01/270...
If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
For a fee of $50 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf
I think my brother is still using me as a dependent on his taxes
@Jason62johnson Have you asked him? If you try to e-file and your return is rejected because your SSN has been used this year, that will be a pretty good clue he claimed you. If he should not/could not claim you then print, sign and mail your own return and let the IRS sort it out.
Not me
I need to know if someone claimed my son
@LatoyaH0430 If someone else claimed your child, your own return will be rejected when you try to e-file. If that happens, you have to print sign and mail your own tax return and let the IRS sort it out.
I filed for the Stimulus Check for myself and my 2 sons, it got rejected because it said my sons SS#'s were already used. I receive SSI so I put just my info in and it went through. Can I still file a paper one for my sons? And I believe it is someone I don't know who claimed my kids, can they end up in jail for claiming my kids? And I have no idea how long this has been going on.
Please help me with this 4 years
disaster for my kids.
For someone else claiming them without my permission
Please contact the IRS using the following link if you feel there has been an issue of identity theft.
In regards to the stimulus payment, when you file your 2020 income tax return, you will be asked for information about the amount of the stimulus payment you received, and if it is less than you are entitled to, you will be given a credit on your 2020 tax return.
I opened a notice belatedly (5071 C) that my dependent son who is 18 and in college, filed a tax return. He did not as he has no income. Went online to idverify and it confirmed a fraudulent return was filed in his name. I have not filed my taxes yet, but will it get rejected by Efile if there was already a tax return filed using my dependent’s information? It isn’t that someone else claimed him, but someone used his information to file. I can’t get through to IRS on phone. Should I hold off filing my own taxes until I submit the forms for him, citing that there is fraud...or is it enough that we did the idverify online? Would be thankful for any advice.
