TurboTax data files are .tax2019 files that can only be read with the TurboTax software or .pdf files that can be read with a pdf viewer.
You can DOWNLOAD the .tax file ...
What do you need .txf file for? You import a .txf File into Turbo Tax. Do you want to import your tax return into Quicken?
Thank you for asking "why." I can't afford turbotax anymore. i'm migrating to HR Block. Last year I spent $200 on my tax return. HR Block wants TXF file for import. I already know about the pdf and .tax files and none of these file formats work with HR Block. I need to get out of TurboTax not in.
Why would TurboTax support a file format that can only be used in a competitors product (obvious answer)?
Did you read the instructions here ? https://www.hrblock.com/tax-center/support/software/software-tax-filing/while-filing-software-return...
Did you look into one of the IRS FREE FILE options ? If your AGI is $69K or less then there is an option you can use for free ... https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free
.txf file is a filetype that is common sharing filetype for tax prep software.
TXF is the acronym for Tax Exchange Format, and it is a file extension for data files containing tax-related information. Since TXF is an accepted standard for saving tax data in financial software, such as Quicken, Intuit, and Microsoft Money, most income tax preparation software will import this type of file. TXF files have the .txf file name extension and are intended for import by tax preparation software.
HR block initial user journey asked me for a .txf file. I took your advise and got out of that, and just started a new return per your rec. It worked!!! It asked me to download and .tax file. Thank you for your response. Tech dept is off for the weekend, so I couldn't get any help from HR Block. I already tried chat and they had no clue.
I'm a bit concerned about the free version because I just bought a home last year and I'm on furlough and I'm a bit concerned that the free software will not be able to address all of my concerns. I will look into it, though. Thank you all for your help.
Thank you @Critter
We know what it is - TurboTax does not support it except for import.
In particular one case is if one has a couple of businesses run thru the turbotax business product that produce k-1 for your personal tax return.
Sorry, You can only import a K-1 to the Desktop CD/Download Software, not to Online version and if you can get a .txf file for it and in the right format. Apparently you can only import K-1s for MLPs and not Trusts or Estates. You can not import a K-1 from Turbo Tax Business Program.
How do I get a txf file of last year's taxes to import into current year's tax program?
How do you get the txf file?
You do not use a .txf file to transfer from 2021. You need to transfer from the .tax2021 file. Where is your 2021 return? And what tax program are you trying to transfer into? Turbo Tax? Or somewhere else?
