How can I find the schedule F to file for expenses, rather than the schedule C, this is automatically populated in business?

In TurboTax Self-Employed, Schedule F is automatically selected if you choose a type of business activity that qualifies to be reported on this form.

When you add a self-employed business, the first question asks Tell us the type of self-employed work you do. If you enter Farm or something related, the software will respond with We need a little more info and it will list the categories that can be reported on schedule F.  These include:

  • Animal farm services
  • Animal production & breeding
  • Crop farm services
  • Forestry and/or logging
  • Fruit & vegetable market sales

You can change your Type of work to an activity that qualifies for schedule F by Editing your self-employed business. On the summary screen, edit the first section for General info >>> then click Edit next to the first section and make your changes.

If you are breeding and selling dogs and exotics(sugar gliders and hedehogs) do you file these expenses under FARM? or general self employment?  And do you have to depreciate animals purchased to start this business?

The Sch F would be better suited to raising and selling animals  and  breeding stock may need to be listed as assets ... here is where to start getting educated :   https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-225
