Did not receive stimulus for Children and not asking About it

If you didn’t get your full stimulus payment, you may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return. Please ensure that your children are entered as dependents in TurboTax. If a child was born in 2020 please select "lived with you all year".

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click "My Info" from the left side of your screen
  3. Scroll down dependents and review the information.

To do claim the Recover Rebate Credit, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into TurboTax.
  2. After entering all your information click "Federal Review" at the top of your screen.
  3. On the screen "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" click "Continue".
  4. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received.  If you did not receive a payment enter "0".
  5. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

For additional information please see Stimulus FAQ at the end of the TurboTax article.

Did not receive stimulus for Children and not asking About it

I did follow the guideline. But still the rebate $3600 (stimulus one and two) is only for me and wife. How about my dependent child rebate? It seems Turbo Tax missed the rebate claim for child. Or should be in other sections? Note that in the personal information. I have filled, have one dependent child with SSN.

The child must qualify for the Child Tax Credit on your tax return. First you will want to check on your form 1040 line 4b to see if the box is checked for "Qualifying for Child Tax Credit".  You can see that in TurboTax online by following these steps.

  1. Click "Tax Tools" in the left hand menu
  2. Click "Tools"
  3. Click "View Tax Summary"
  4. Click "Preview My 1040" in the left hand menu

Check your interview answers with the below are the criteria in mind.

  • The child must be younger than 17 on the last day of the tax year, generally Dec 31.
  • The child must be the taxpayer’s son, daughter, stepchild, foster or adopted child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother or half-sister. An adopted child includes a child lawfully placed with them for legal adoption. They can also include grandchildren, nieces or nephews.
  • The child must have not provided more than half of their own support for the year.
  • The taxpayer must claim the child as their dependent on their federal tax return.
  • The child cannot file a tax return for the same year with the status married filing jointly, unless the only reason they are filing is to claim a refund.
  • The child must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national or a U.S. resident alien.
  • In most cases, the child must have lived with the taxpayer for more than half of 2019.
  • The child must have a valid social security number.
