I have an existing payee who in the past received a 1099 MISC, how do I change the form type to NEC. The NEC checkbox is grayed out and I do not see any way to edit the form type.

I would think you need to delete the MISC one and start a new 1099NEC. You might have to enter a new business to fill out 1099NECs.

Quick Employer Forms FAQ

You need to give a 1099NEC to anyone you paid $600 or more to for the year. But not to corporations or for merchandise. You send the IRS a copy of the 1099NEC with the transmittal summary form 1096. These are due to the person by Jan 31 and to the IRS by Jan 31 also.
VolvoGirl, thanks for responding!
I send out about 10 of the NEC each year, all of the other payees are listed as getting a NEC. This one payee's form for some reason is listed as getting a MISC, I assume that is what he received in previous years. It seems that selecting the kind of form that you want to send to a particular payee should be rather straight forward. I'm baffled!
So I went forward and created a new duplicate record for the payee in question. This allowed me to specify that I wanted to send a NEC form rather than MISC. I just hope that having a duplicate payee does not cause any issues down the road.
