Yes, your supplemental property tax payments are deductible. Here is where to enter them:
1. Go to Federal.
2. Select Deductions and Credits.
3. Select Property (Real Estate) Taxes.
4, Since the supplemental taxes are in addition to what was originally assessed and paid, you will add them with the original taxes paid on your home.
What if I did my taxes before receiving the supplemental tax bill?
If you did not receive the tax bill for your supplemental taxes until after you filed your 2021 tax return, this means you did not pay them in 2021, therefore they would not be deductible on your 2021 return. You will need to wait until 2022 to claim them on your federal taxes.
If you paid supplemental taxes in 2021 and you want to enter them on your return, then you would need to Amend Your Return to include the taxes you paid in 2021 on your 2021 return.
If your mortgage interest, property taxes, medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of your AGI were lower than your standard deduction on your original return, unless the supplemental taxes bring your itemized expenses up to a point they are greater than your standard deduction, adding this to your return will not make any difference so then you would not need to amend your return.
If you have 2 installment dates, one is due November 2022, and the 2nd is due in April 2023, but you pay both at the same time, in Nov 2022, can you claim deductions for both in this years tax return, or does the 2nd installment due for 2023 have to be part of next years tax return?
A cash basis taxpayer may claim the second tax payment paid in November 2022 on the 2022 Federal tax return.
This TurboTax Help states:
If your local assessor sent you the 2023 property tax bill in 2022, and you paid it by December 31 of 2022, you can claim it on your 2022 return.
