Will I still get my refund if I forgot a w2?

@Zachmorrisey "Accepted"  does not mean "approved."   If you forgot to enter a W-2,  you are going to have to amend later.

Will I still get my refund if I forgot a w2?

I just realized I did the same thing. Filed and forgot about a w2 I never got for like $600. I'm hoping it doesn't screw everything up. I usually compare w2s to SSA income to make sure they match up before submitting them but.. Oops..

@Megshultz1

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

 If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

  Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need will not be available until late February.

Will I still get my refund if I forgot a w2?

I forgot a w2 in the year 2022 and received tax refund. Now do I have to amend and pay? I need to understand because I'm very worried about this. Because if I do the amended, I need to pay, so I need to understand if I need to pay the money that I already received and more or what?  Thanks in advance if you can help me.

If you need to pay it's because if you had entered all the W2s originally you would have had a smaller refund so you owe some of it back.

The amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe.  I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V.  Just include a check with the 1040X.  Ignore the 1040V.  That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting.  Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V.  Pay the amount on the actual 1040X line 20.
