Will I receive overpayment of taxes in a separate check? There was a pop up saying I’m owed money from overpayment. I haven’t seen this pop up message again though?

Was it for excess Social Security?  Did you get more than 1 W2?

You get excess SS back if you had more than 1 employer and those employers took out more than the max for Social Security tax in W2 box 4.  For 2023 the max for Social Security is $9,932.40 on $160,200 of wages (160,200 x 6.2%).  And it is for each spouse separately if married.  Check 1040 Schedule 3 line 11 which goes to 1040 line 31.

It was just a pop up that said “you have an overpayment of X this year” and gave me the option to put it towards next years taxes or not. No idea what it’s from but the pop up hasn’t shown again now that I’m about to file. Just curious if because I said not to put towards next years, if I’ll just get the check separately. It’s not included with my tax return.

Oh that.  An overpayment is your refund.   You can have them keep all or part of your refund as an estimated payment towards next year's tax return.  But most people want to get their refund now.   So to get your refund now do not say to apply it to next year. Good you said Not to apply it.

What do you mean it's not included?  It is your refund.  It will come whichever way you picked.  By a check or direct deposit.  federal and state and refunds come separately at different times from different places.

This is what I mean. It’s not my refund that I’m talking about. When I selected no, it didn’t add that money to my taxes and nowhere is it found when I review my taxes.

It is the state 648 refund.  It isn't added on.  You are still getting the $648 refund. Otherwise if you apply it to next year it would subtract from the 648.  Did you maybe say Yes to apply it?  You can go back and say No.  It doesn't affect your federal refund.

And you can turn off that Race Mode and see your federal and state refunds.  Try clicking that button by Race Mode.

  • I’ll try to turn off race mode! I just haven’t seen that message pop back up since I went in and edited something. I believe I said not to apply it for next years taxes. I’m probably overthinking it since it didn’t pop back up again. Do you know how to access that again maybe? I appreciate you for all your help so far too.
