Slow down. You cannot amend a tax return that was just accepted. You have to wait for it to be processed by the IRS. Trying to send in an amended return while they are still processing the original return could confuse things and delay your refund for months.
Do not try to change anything on your return now. When you amend, your Form 1040X has to be prepared from the return exactly the way it looked when you filed it originally. You have to wait. Once your return has been processed you will complete a Form 1040X --- which is not yet available --- and submit it to amend the mistakes made when you filed your original return. It takes the IRS at least four months to process an amended return.
The 2020 Form 1040X does not become available until the end of March 2021 (subject to change).
Thanks so much. That helped a lot.
so I filed with the healthcare insurance like a idiot and need to file a amended return the irs has my money on hold waiting on a 12c in which I can not get because I never had health care and turboTax online won’t let me a amend 2020 taxes because the irs accept it all ready
IRS Letter 12C is normally sent to reconcile payment owed on a premium health care plan. If you did not have health care and filed that you had healthcare with the marketplace, then the IRS will normally contact you and resolve this without having to file an amend.
Your best option would be to call the IRS and see what needs to be done to resolve your issue.

I filed my boyfriends return and my return the same day. I put on both of ours that our son was born, but that I was not claiming him and my boyfriend was. a few days later, my return got accepted but my boyfriends got denied. the reason was that somehow my return claimed my our son on eic but not as a dependent. I need to amend my return so that I can remove our son from mine and my boyfriend can claim our son.
Even if you amend your return, after your original return is finished being fully processed at IRS, and your boyfriend files his return, then, since the ssn has already been used, he will have to file a paper return to claim the child.

How to amend a fully processed federal tax return
I need to amend my return because of the unemployment credit. Without amending I have to pay the federal 1600, with an amendment it would be 400 instead. Why should i pay more than have to wait months to get my money back. Why not allow me to amend so I dont get borked over anymore than I already am. Will I be able to amend by the 15th of april.
Because this is what the IRS says. They will directly send you the refund.
If you have already filed, you do not need to file or amend unless the calculations make you newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions that are not already included on the original tax return.

Yes I need to amend because I am newly eligible for federal credits. I owe either way and am not getting anything back. However I would like to pay 461 instead of the 1600 I am now responsible for because they are not honoring the 10,200 unemployment credit. The american rescue act makes 10,200 of unemployment non taxable in New York. I did my taxes before that was signed into law. I owe 1600 to the federal and state each. If I amend then I owe the federal 461 instead of 1600. When will I be able to amend.
You will not need to amend your return to receive the reduced tax payment due to not paying income tax on the first $10,600 of unemployment benefits. The IRS has announced that it will be making those adjustments automatically and asked that we not file an amend for it.
We do not yet have guidance on how New York state will handle the reduced income taxes, but expect that they will follow the same procedure as federal.
For people filing their TurboTax returns now, the $10,200 exclusion is built into the program. The IRS plans to start issuing refunds in May for people who have already filed and paid.
As indicated. you generally do not need to amend for Federal.
However, taxpayers would have to file an amended return if they did not originally claim the EITC or other credits, but now are eligible because the [unemployment comp] exclusion changed their income.
Is turbotax going to let us amend by the 15th.
I need to amend because of the new tax credit which takes me from owing to giving me a small refund. Due to this there is no account information for the refund to be credited to. Also I am moving in a few weeks and I know that checks from the IRS will not be forwarded by the post office. What am I to do?
I am in the same situation and all I keep hearing is we are going to get it back sometime later. I need to claim the credit now so i can pay 461 instead of 1640 but no one hear understands that. If i am gonna get stuck paying the full amount i need to arrange a payment plan and can not wait for the last minute. I have to pay by april 15th or they are going to slap on late fees. They weaseled us into doing taxes early so we can get the stimulus and now look how we are screwed for filing early and the stimulus was a check instead off in my account. If I can not file an amendment before the 15th it will be the last time i use turbo tax. I bet as soon as i go make a payment plan they will make it amendable but i will be locked into paying the full amount. What a way to screw us during a pandemic. I have to use my 1400 stimulus plus some of my unemployment just to pay the state. really hoping federal becomes amendable or i am borked. I guess everyone feels i should just pay it all and then wait months to get a bit back. What a screwed up system.
