Pending simply means that your e-filed return is on its way and that the government hasn't accepted or rejected it yet.
If you e-filed your return before February 12, it'll stay in Pending status until the IRS starts processing the backlog of returns.
After that, e-filed returns generally sit in Pending status for 24–48 hours before coming back as either Accepted or Rejected. Sometimes state returns stay in Pending for several days or even longer.
Most likely the IRS is dealing with a backlog of returns it received on the first day. Please give it another day or two.
Thank you. My concern is that it has been over 72 hours and on TurboTax end it says that the irs has received it. The irs has NOT received it though on their end.
The IRS only updates once a day, during the overnight hours, so check again tomorrow morning.
@SweetieJean @LenaH My problem is with TurboTax. They are showing online that it it has been transmitted. The TurboTax automated system ,when I call, says I have NOT filed a return. The irs has NOT received anything. My online records do not match anything else, including their own information. I talked to a rep, and they were not able to see anything. Can I just file with a different company?
Did you get the email saying the return was filed ? If so all you can do is wait while the return is pending IRS acceptance there is nothing you can do but wait ... filing elsewhere will simply be rejected.
@Critter-3 not from the irs. I got one from TurboTax, but TurboTax reps can't see anything and the TurboTax automated system says I haven't filed. It's crazy.
