@weyrisa I did read your post. We cannot see your 2018 return or access your account so we do not know what went wrong with your 2018 return--we cannot tell if you have a user error for 2018 and did not enter your children as dependents or if the IRS made a mistake (that happens too). You say last year was the first time you used TT--perhaps you did not enter the dependents correctly. And there were major tax law changes that went into effect for 2018 and beyond. The forms changed, the tax laws changed--Not sure what line your are referring to that has a "big fat zero." Your dependent(s) would be listed up near the top of your 2018 Form 1040.
Look to see if you said you could be claimed as someone else's dependent; or see if your child is claimed as your dependent on that 2018 return. Does it show your filing status as Head of Household? That is also going to be at the top of the page.
Claiming "zero deductions" does not make sense; you are not required to itemize deductions in order to receive a stimulus check.
And....you have not filed a return for 2019? Why not? Get it prepared and filed so they can use 2019's return to issue your stimulus check.
I filed HOH and my daughter is listed with her ssn as a dependant. I am 38 years old and NO ONE is claiming me as a dependent. IF I follow turbo tax online how would it be possible to enter a dependent incorrectly? Please humor me...
I did file my 2019 taxes they are accepted BUT NOT PROCESSED, thus, I only have an IRS transcript for 2018.
The IRS 2018 transcript is what shows the 0 and if ya'll would allow screen shots I'd show you what I was referring to here:
Filing Status: Head of Household.
EXEMPTION NUMBER: 00 (this is the ZERO that makes me ineligible and is listed as "2" on prior year returns!!!)
Dependent 1 Name CTRL: (Daughter's name and last 4 SSN)
Please offer assistance on how to correct the disconnect from your product, which offers a guarantee, and the IRS! I just filed my 2019 taxes with you guys and don't have much faith that is correct, will go back to HRBlock (which is what I used in 2017).
@weyrisa There were no personal exemptions for anyone for 2018 returns--so I think you may be misinterpreting that. The tax reform laws eliminated personal exemptions. They did not eliminate claiming a dependent--and you say your transcript shows that you filed as HOH and lists your dependent. So----not sure what is causing your stimulus check problem/delay--but it is not caused by zero deductions or zero exemptions.
TurboTax has no control over your stimulus check, nor can TT track it for you or tell you when the IRS will issue it. Refer to the sites linked below:
You can call the IRS hotline at 1-800-919-9835 to get updates on your stimulus payment.

I called the IRS, and they told me that is what made me ineligible for the stimulus payment. And I contact TurboTax To get it corrected, and you guys say you have no idea what’s going on, which is the exact definition of “run around”

This is what your 2018 1040 should look like - note that there is NO exemption box on the 2018 1040 at all because it did not exist in 2018. If the Head of Household box is checked and the dependent is listed as a dependent then your tax return was correct and the IRS has made an error (which they do quite often).
@weyrisa The other thing we do not know about your 2018 return--and you have not mentioned -- is whether the 2018 return was processed and if you received your income tax refund for 2018. If you received your refund last year, then the return was processed correctly. We just do not know why you think you are getting no "exemptions" or why you think it is TurboTax's fault that you have not yet received a stimulus check. No one here is trying to give you the "run around". You have used several terms incorrectly--first you said deductions, then it changed to exemptions...we are trying to understand without being able to see your tax return.
Turbotax somehow filled in the box under standard deductions "your spouse as a dependent: and now I am screwed out of a stimulus check. I did not check this box. Never using them again.
I just got off the phone with IRS questioning why I did not receive a stimulus check. Turns out there is a little checkbox next to Someone can claim your spouse as a dependent that was checked on both 2018 and 2019 tax returns. I file head of households. My spouse Is not on my return. I didn’t check this box either year. IRS told me that other TT users have claimed the same issue. Amending my taxes will not make a difference. I‘m screwed. Thank you Turbo Tax!
Same thing happened to me and my husband. I am writing the IRS taxpayer advocate office to inform them of the deception in the TurboTax software used for e-filing tax returns. Very angry.
Here is the thing, people are trolling turbo tax all over social media right now. They are saying it's the IRS' fault and IRS is saying it is Turbo Tax's fault. Something was messed up and Turbo Tax is not being up front or correctly communicating this with their customers. H&R Block seems to have had the same issues however unlike Turbo Tax they are working very hard and diligently to get their customer's their money for their second round of stimulus checks. Turbo Tax is failing it's customers and in the process losing thousands of customers. After filing with Turbo since 2012 and I will no longer be using them.
@Dhawari - at this point there is an easier way to fix your stimulus situation....you will get what you are eligible for on the 2020 tax return. read below
The way this REALLY works is EVERYTHING is based on you 2020 income, filing status and number of children under the age of 17 on your 2020 tax return. What these numbers were in 2018 and 2019 does not matter.
The IRS will calculate your stimulus based on 2020 numbers; that is what is considered the ACTUAL.
The two payments were just ESTIMATES; the 1st stimulus was an estimate based on either the 2018 or 2019 tax return, using whatever was available.. the 2nd stimulus was an estimate based on the 2019 tax return only
if the ACTUAL is greater than the ESTIMATE, you will receive that amount as a credit on your 2020 tax return on Line 30.
if the ESTIMATE is greater than the ACTUAL, you are not required to return the money nor does it impact your refund. Line 30 on Form 1040 will be zero.
does that help?
I’ve used Turbo Tax the past 7 years and was told by the IRS that I’ll have to apply for the credit when I do my 2020 taxes!!! Thank you Turbo Tax!! I’ll never use your company again!!!!! Ridiculous
I was confirmed affected by the “spouse can be claimed issue” by IRS and TT for my 2018 return. I since filed my 2019 taxes. The IRS sent my first EIP via paper check 11/6/20. I don’t know if this was because TT or IRS fixed the issue, or because I filed a new return. I am now waiting for my second EIP and says status unavailable on the IRS site. I went to my transcript for 2019 and the stupid spouse box is still checked! This is crazy. I’ll probably get my 2nd payment in 6 mos via paper check as well. By that time my 2020 taxes will be done
I efiled and later found out TT checked a box stating someone else can claim me which is not true. I never saw that box when I was filling out the form in efile. I did not get my stimulus check and called TT 4 times and the IRS 4 times and one of these 2 entities screwed up my 1040. I will never use TurboTax again. I did not check this box as I never saw it. I filed married filing separately. Very disappointed and angry.
