if you are eligible for extra credits, you can amend to get them.
You have to look at your tax return to determine this.
in any case do nothing until IRS makes its own adjustment and you know exactly what they did for you.
@SharonP811 If the tax law change makes you eligible for a credit you were not getting at all---like EIC---then you may need to amend. If you were already getting EIC then the IRS will also adjust your refund for that. For now----do nothing----wait to see what the IRS does because they are issuing refunds for the unemployment tax change. You have plenty of time to amend later if you really need to.
If you are eligible for the extra refund for federal tax that was withheld from your unemployment the IRS will be sending you an additional refund sometime during the next several months. TurboTax cannot track or predict when it will be sent. The IRS has not provided a way for you to track it, so all you can do is wait for the refund to arrive.

You *might* need to amend your state return for unemployment that was taxed by your state.
Do NOT amend your return until your original return has been fully processed. And......why are you amending? There are some recent tax law changes that you do not need to send in amended returns for---and it will be a waste of time and effort to amend for those reasons.
Select your tax year for amending instructions:
What does it mean to "amend" a return?
· Do I Need to Amend my Tax Return?
Thank you for your reply. 🙂 I was on unemployment last year for 13 weeks. I did my taxes in February and ended up owing over $500. It was accepted and I paid months ago. I received an email a little over a month ago from Turbotax because that's who I use to file my taxes. It states this: "In order to claim these additional deductions and credits, you will need to file an amended federal tax return. However, you do not need to file an amended state return at this time. Amending is easy, and our experts are here to help. Simply log in to your account and select "Amend using TurboTax Online," and we'll guide you through it."
It is confusing to me because it states you will need to file an amended federal tax return but you don't need to do it at this time. Then it goes on to state "Simply log in to your account and select "Amend using TurboTax Online," and we'll guide you through it." but there is no place I can find to select it.
So I'm not sure if I need to do something or if whatever the difference would be will be automatically refunded to me? The email is confusing. Are you saying that I do not need to amend for this new tax break on unemployment?

You *might* need to amend your state return for unemployment that was taxed by your state.
FIRST ... do not amend anything until the original return has been fully processed. The IRS will automatically recompute the return and send the extra refund amount either after the original amount was sent or with the original refund amount.
If you had no qualifying dependents and you now qualify for the EIC that was not on the return originally then they will compute it and add it to the refund ... there is nothing you need to do.
However if you had qualifying dependents AND you did NOT qualify for the EIC on the original return they will mail you a new form 15111 to fill in, sign and return so they can add the EIC to your return. WAIT for the IRS notice ... do NOT amend for this credit.
NOW ... if you are eligible for another credit like the form 8880 Saver's Credit and it was not on the original return then you may amend to get the missing deductions or credits but ONLY AFTER the IRS finishes their part. Filing an amended return too early will delay processing even further than the currently estimated 6 months.
LASTLY ... you may need to amend the state return but again do nothing until the federal has finished.
Please see I need to amend my state return for instructions.
Please wait until your state return has been processed before filing the amended state. Please be aware that you can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.
I am facing an issue when i attempt to amend my 2020 Tax.
I used Turbotax online for my 2020 tax return, I realized i need to make some updates so i am trying to amend online.
However, before i even make anythings that i immediately see i owe both federal and state (CA) taxes. I am scratching my head to understand why this is the case as i never even made a changes yet.
Anyone experienced this? Can you please share your experience?
Thanks
