When I filed an extension in April, 2022, I made an additional tax contribution. Where do I claim this when I file an amendment?

Amendment?  You do not file an amended return if you have not filed the original tax return.  The extension request you filed in April 2022 was not the original tax return.

To enter, change or delete a payment made with an extension request (Federal, State, Local) -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • On Income Taxes Paid, click on the start or update button

On the next screen select the type of extension payment made and click on the start or update button

Or enter federal extension payment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to federal extension payment

The federal extension payment will be shown on Schedule 3 Line 10. The amount from Schedule 3 Part II Line 15 flows to Form 1040 Line 31

Thanks. I need to file an amendment since I filed the return during the extension period, and did not include the additional tax paid when I filed for an extension. Note that the text is limited on this platform and I had to leave out that part.

JOHN .... do NOT file an amendment for missing payments UNTIL  the IRS processes the original return as this is a common error  that the IRS usually corrects automatically.   And if you did send in an amended return they will not look at it until the original return has been processed and even then it will take 6 month to a year to be processed  so don't be in a rush.
