Hi,
I am a MA international student(Resident Alien) who received scholarships at university and this is my 1st time doing tax reports and returns. I already e-file through TurboTax, and it now asks me to print the documents to mail, but I forget to enter the -5000 treaty amount before print. What should I do to claim the China-US treaty? (I haven't sent the paperwork yet, should I add an amend or 8843 with my W2 and 1040)? Can anyone help? Thanks a lot!

Has your return already been accepted? If not, you would need to wait until it has been accepted or rejected before you can make any changes. If rejected, you would need to correct any information that caused your return to be rejected as well as make any other changes to your return that you see fit, then proceed to resubmit your return. If accepted, you would need to amend your return. The 1040X Amendment form will be available for filing on 3/25/2021. At that time, you can then follow the instructions in this FAQ here to amend your 2020 tax return.
Dear EbonyL122824,
Thank you so much for your reply! I have not got any replies yet and assume it might take several months because the COVID and IRS mentioned they might process the paperwork slower? Here the situation gets different after I talked to an advisor from the Payroll department at my university: he mentions I should not claim the treaty because my income is low and no taxes were taken. Do I still need to make amend if this happens(since, in this case, there is no need to claim the treaty)? Thanks a lot!
If you no longer need to make any changes or corrections, you do not need to amend your tax return.
Thank you for your reply!
