Did you send in that Form 1040X before your original return was fully processed? If so, you may have caused confusion that will delay the processing even more. You have three years from the filing deadline to amend a return. You should wait for the original return to be fully processed before you send in an amended return.
Yes, the IRS is way behind in processing mailed returns, so it is possible that your Form 1040X is still sitting in a trailer. All you can do is wait to see what the IRS does with your return at this point. For your original return you can look at the IRS refund site (if you were supposed to get a refund):
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
As for your amended return:
When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

Thank you we had to do an amended 1040X return through a CPA service after the electronic submission was completed. They advised us that the 1040X must be mailed and provided proper address. We verified through Certified Mail the return was received in early May. We also had to mail our state return also of which we are getting a refund. Several calls to state taxation office have been unsuccessful. I just want to know if we’re OK if these are not processed by 7/15 and we just have to wait.
It takes MONTHS for the IRS to process an amended return. Even in normal times it takes about four months, and now it is taking much longer. As stated previously--you have three years from the filing deadline to submit an amended return. You are not subject to the July 15 deadline for that 1040X. And...anything the IRS received before that deadline--including a "regular" mailed return--is timely if it was postmarked by the deadline.
You are just in for a very long wait for the return to be processed.
Thanks again and very good to know. This is the first year we’ve had an issue like this. The pandemic does not help anyone. As far as my state return it is a normal 1040 but we were told it had to be mailed also. I would assume same thing as long as received prior to deadline just have to wait until processed.
Thank you. On Federal we owe and I sent payment in with the return. I assume same thing just have to wait on the IRS at this point? I don’t want to incur any penalty costs since we did get it in on time.
@jeffreyjdoran If you sent the payment in, you are okay, no matter how long it takes the IRS to open the envelope or process your return. They will honor the postmark on the envelope or the date the e-file was received.
I appreciate the help and don’t mean to send so many questions. I want to be sure as this is the first time ever dealing with this. Really like to thank everyone for their suggestions and help.
