My son mistakenly submitted his taxes as NOT being a dependent, so when I claimed him, my taxes were rejected. He has filed an amendment and it has been received. Hw long will it take the IRS to process his amendment so that I can file my taxes? Will it be so long that I need to apply now for an extension?

It will take months for the IRS to process your child's amended return. You do not need to wait for that to happen. You cannot e-file at all this year since he put his SSN into the system. You can claim your son as your dependent but you cannot e-file. Print, sign and date your return in ink, and mail it in. Filing by mail is your only option now. Sorry.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Please see this IRS publication on amended returns.
