Depends on what you are adding...if that item would have required an upgrade on the original return then it also will on the amended return.
It depends.
TurboTax transmits your return based upon your input into the return. It does not prepare the return but is simply a tool used to complete the forms based upon your information you enter.
Preparing an amended return is included in the Free Edition of the software. If you have to amend but your amended return requires additional forms that were not included in the Free Edition, this may be the reason you are being charged. Please see the link below to the tax forms included in the Free Edition to determine if this is the reason for the fee.

My wife and I started out own business and I have been a 1099 for a couple of years. I didn't file with TurboTax because my accountant has been filing for me. With the stimulus check, I saw TurboTax can get the check without filing so I went ahead and did it this way unbeknownst to me TurboTax somehow filed my taxes for me even though I checked not to file at the time. Now I have to pay TurboTax to amend my taxes????
Ok ... so in your haste to get the stimulus money you ignored the warnings to not use it if you still had to file a real return ???
Well then you must amend the zero income return you filed ... how you do it is up to you.
If you are still using the accountant tell him what you did and they will make the correction.
If you are going to do this yourself then choose a program to use or get the forms from the IRS to complete manually. The stimulus registration was free ... but the Self Employed program you need is not free... that is why you are being told to upgrade.
Either way the amended return will have to be mailed in and it will take 4 - 6 months to process.
I'm in the same problem turbo tax changed the filing year to 2019 instead of 2018 i filed late due to personal reasons now both years are messed up
TT doesn't change the year ... if you tried to use the CURRENT online program the ONLY tax year you can file is 2019. You must not have reviewed the return prior to filing or you would have seen the incorrect year on every tax form.
So if you filed a 2019 return using the incorrect 2018 information so to fix this error you have 2 steps to take.
1) file the correct 2018 return using any method you choose ... get the forms and manually fill them in, use a local paid tax preparer, or buy the 2018 program from some company... but no matter which option you use the return MUST be mailed in ... it cannot be efiled.
2) wait for the incorrect 2019 return to be processed ... it is very possible the IRS will reject the return due to the wrong info ... so all you can do is wait for the refund or the IRS letter. If you get the letter respond that the filing was in error and if you still need to file a 2019 return ask them if they want you to mail in an original return or an amended one.
Hi,
My Wife an I filed, Married Filing Separately in 2018 and 2019.
On my 2018 and 2019 returns under Standard Deduction; "Someone can claim your spouse as a dependant" was checked off for some reason, I didn't do it.
As a consequence I am not going to receive a stimulus check.
FYI: She received her individual $1,200 check months ago.
IRS says I can claim the stimulus on my 2020 return, could have used the cash now.
Any idea why this would happen?
Thank you,
Mike
SAME, EXACT THING HAS HAPPENED TO ME!! THEY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN! THEIR APATHY MAY CAUSE ME MY VERY LIFE BECAUSE OF THE IMPACT ON THE ARRIVAL OF MY STIMULUS CHECK! THESE PEOPLE ARE ROBOTS WITH NO SOUL, AND CARE ABOUT NO ONE.
I agree, the fact that their faulty software negatively affects the financial stability and life of not only the customer who trusted them with their taxes but also their entire family, and when you try to get any help they just send you links to articles that have nothing to do with your problem, I also hope they get sued out of existence
