Turbo Tax filed my taxes twice - what do I do

I am waiting on K-3's to go with my K-1's for information needed.  I filed an extension and paid our Federal taxes due on-line through the extension link.  When I went to eFile our State taxes, I unchecked the box to eFile the Federal taxes.  When I eFiled, it still transmitted both Federal and State.  Since our payment information was in the system, TurboTax also processed our Federal payment.  I got an approval acceptance on the extension, then a half hour later, I got an approval acceptance on the Federal filing.  Plus we got double charged for our Federal taxes due.

I still need to wait until June to get the K-3's.  So what do I do and how do I get our overpayment back.

A State tax return cannot be e-filed if the federal return has not been e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

Did you get an email from TurboTax indicating that the federal tax return was filed and another email indicating the federal tax return was Accepted by the IRS.  These would be specifically for the federal tax return, NOT the extension request for the federal tax return.

The IRS is usually pretty good about refunding duplicate payments fairly soon after their systems process them automatically.  It's not often that I refer to them as efficient- but this process typically works well.

Typically, you do not need to do anything to initiate the refund.   However, you can reach out to the IRS e-file payment services team if you'd like at 888-353-4537 if you'd like or if you don't receive a refund check within about 2 weeks.

When you receive the K-3, you can amend the return if there is material information that you need to report.  How to file an Amended Tax Return

Yes, I got a second email that the Federal were filed and the acceptance email.

It must have automatically triggered the filing then as you indicate.  I obviously did it wrong, but how would you file an extension plus file the State?

Thank you, that is not an unreasonable amount of time to wait and see if they automatically issue the refund.  I suppose I need to look into this next year because we now have K-1's as part of our stock portfolio.  I'm guessing this will happen next year as well.

You can not efile state before federal.  Filing an extension is not filing a federal return.   So to file state before federal you would have to print and mail state.   Why would you want to file state first?  Doesn’t it need all your federal info even the K-1s?

Yeah, it looks like I goofed.  I didn't even think I could file a State extension but it seems I could have.  I'll have to amend both possibly.  This is my first time with K-1's and K-3's.  Hopefully the information that comes on the K-3 is negligible and doesn't affect anything other than stated information.  The K-1's already captured my dividends and has a general statement about no international transactions.  But the K-3 box was checked.
