Is it normal that my tax refund is going to be half of what I got last year or have I done something wrong while filing?

The easiest way to determine what's different this year from last is to compare the two years' returns.  Start with the income, go down through each item, and compare your adjusted gross incomes.  If they're close to the same number, then compare your deductions from each year.  Any difference will come out that way.
