I didn't claim one of dependents when filing 2013 Tax return. Can I use TurboTax to file (or prepare) amended tax return?

I guess I filed the tax sometime in March 2014, and I didn't use TurboTax for that.

To amend a 2013 tax return, you will need to purchase one of our Desktop products located on this page:https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/2013/

Prior year tax returns cannot be filed online.

You will need to enter the information from your 2013 return into the Turbotax program and then amend the return so Form 1040X will populate (these instructions are assuming you did not use TurboTax to file In 2013). To do this, select "Need to Amend a filed return" and on the next screen select "Start a new return to amend". You will start and complete a new return, then you will amend to add your dependent.

You will then mail Form 1040X along with supporting documentation to the IRS address listed on Page 14 of this link (mailing address depends on filing situation, please read through the chart to determine where to mail)https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf

Thanks for your detailed reply. Here is one thing more, if a new born baby survives only for a few days (say, 4 days, and got SSN) can we claim that baby as a dependent?

Yes, a child born during the year and that passes away during the year is deemed to have lived in your home for the entire year, so you may claim as a dependent. I am very sorry for your loss.

Thanks!! Based on your reply, amending my 2013 tax return makes sense and is justified, right?

You are welcome! It does make sense, however, you may want to post a new question for a Tax Professional to answer for that part of the question so they can assist in helping determine if you'd get a bigger refund (they can help you determine based on your AGI/Taxable income). If your taxable income is zero sometimes adding deductions does not necessarily equate to a refund.

Thanks again. I will post a new question regarding that. But first i wanted to double check if I can claim my baby. One last thing, is it still okay if the child had not spent time at home, for example, born and then died in the hospital? I appreciate your help and time!

Yes, as long as the baby was not still born you can still claim as a dependent.
