You can no longer file your 2018 tax return with TurboTax Online. You must download the version of the software for that tax year and prepare your return. You will not be able to efile. You must mail a paper return to the IRS. You can find the software you need in the link below:

TurboTax 2018 Tax Software

If the missing W-2 was for your 2019 return, and you have not filed, you can add the W-2 by following these steps:

  • From the Federal menu in TurboTax Online, click Wages & Income
  • Expand the menu for Wages and Salaries
  • Click Start/Revisit next to Wages and Salaries (W-2)
  • Click Add a W-2
  • Enter the information as shown on your W-2 and click Continue

If you have already filed, it is similar to dropping your return in the mailbox. You cannot retrieve or change it. You will need to amend your return. Should you have to amend, follow the steps below:

  1. Log into your TurboTax account
  2. Choose the tax year that you wish to amend
  3. Click Amend
  4. Make any necessary changes

Keep in mind that when you are amending, the refund tracker monitors the difference from your original filing to the amended return. It does not include any original refund or balance due. If you are claiming any previously unclaimed income, you may see the difference as a balance due.  The 1040X for 2019 amended returns is expected to be available on February 20, 2020.

Which state tax returns have you tried to prepare?

How many W-2’s do you have?  Which states are listed in box 15 of the W-2’s

Just to clarify, did you forget to add another W-2 to your return before you filed it? If so, please see How do I add another form (like a W-2) or add/change/update something after I already filed? for assistance.

If that does not answer your question, please provide additional details.
