Schedule payment after April 15

In light of the recent IRS guidance, is there a way within TurboTax to schedule taxes due payments to the IRS after April 15 (though before July 15)?

No, once a tax return has been filed and accepted by the IRS the payment date cannot be changed.

You will have to cancel the payment and then pay the federal taxes owed on the IRS payment website on or before July 15, 2020.

  • Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method.
  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.

Go to this IRS payment website and choose Direct Pay - https://www.irs.gov/payments

I want to be clear -- for those of us who have not filed our taxes yet, TurboTax allows us to schedule payments due to the IRS.  However, TurboTax requires that such payments be scheduled by April 15 -- TurboTax will not let you input a later date in that field.  Given new IRS guidance on payment date, I would hope for a simple update from Intuit to address this.

You are correct there is no way to enter a payment date after 4/15 in TurboTax, nor is there a way to change your direct debit date through TurboTax. We are working on this and will post updates here:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/coronavirus/.

Did this get resolved. I filed March 28 and thought I scheduled a payment for July 10 but can’t find anything anywhere.

Unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to determine that for you.  

 

TurboTax takes your information and submits it to the IRS as you enter it.  

 

You can use the following link to determine the status of your payments and account with the IRS directly.  This is your best option at this point in time.
