I did e-file my 2021 return on 03/12/2022 using desktop version of the TT software . After few hours I received rejection due to IND-181-01 (PIN missing) . Now I have received a new PIN from IRS website. But when I try to open the previously saved turbotax file it fails. I notice that my hard disk exhibits some errors for the files created on that day. I am able to start the TT application but it cant reopen the saved 2021 file as the data file ( ".tax2021" file ) was saved on a different disk which has error now. I am in a state where the error on the disk can't be fixed. One option is to redo everything which I can . Question is about the STATE filing for which I had paid $25 . Will I have to pay again for the STATE filing if I redo everything ?

Thanks . I could successfully refile my 2021 return .
I had multiple problems , I am explaining them here if that can help others who face similar issues.
1) My 2021 return got rejected at first attempt by FEDERAL for the reason "IND-181-01 - The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for the first taxpayer on your return is missing". I could get my IP PIN from IRS website. Please note that IP PIN is different from Turbotax E-Filing PIN .
2) My ".tax2021" file (where TurboTax tax saves all information) got corrupted due to hard disk errors. I had a PDF copy of 2021 filing which was not able to loaded by Turbotax. So the only option was to recreate everything which I could do by spending some time.
3) Avoid repayment for STATE filing . This is where Turbotax support could help me . This ended up as very long time consuming activity. I had to call them twice, each time pass through the funny Interactive Voice Recognition (IVR) system, hear their music for long and reach to an an agent. Agents were really helpful but the second agent had some trouble to find the order unlocking key for me. Overall I spent around 3 hours to avoid repayment and to save $25 . If I knew this in advance I could have thought differently.
In the second attempt I added IP PIN as explained in the TurboTax documentation. This time both Federal & State returns got accepted:).
Each year I see this problem. Simple fix would to be to ADD a Question in the Filing Portion of the Easy Step method that asks if you received form CP01A from the IRS and if so please enter your six digit pin here. But no, we just clod up the support lines. Also, by the way, your instructions for 181-01 refers to Windows and not the Mac version so that's completely useless too. Please hire some real programmers.
